Apartments/living locations in Davis

I was wondering if any current students could recommend any apartment complexes for incoming students, preferably near campus. Is there any particular side of campus that is preferable? The daviswiki has way too much information to pick through and it doesn’t really have apartment reviews. I’m looking for a studio apt. or 1 bdrm for ~$800 a month.

I’ll be moving to Davis in a little over a month, so I don’t have too much time to explore all of the complexes/options. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hmm I don’t know many places that have 1b/1b apartments for that price. If you’re looking to be only a few minutes away from campus, check out Sycamore Lane and University Court. Those are the two most popular apartments next to campus. There are quite a few other places nearby but I cannot vouch for their popularity such as Wake Forest. The only studios you’ll be able to find are downtown and I actually have no clue how to find available places other than ULoop or Craigslist (maybe even FB Marketplace).

Davis is divided in five parts, Central Davis, North Davis, South Davis, East Davis and West Davis.
North and West Davis have the cheapest apartments and a bunch of bus lines that run along the streets.
South Davis is the most expensive. Some call it the “luxurious side” of Davis, but it’s not too big of a difference. The only downside of South Davis is that it feels distant because of an overpass that one must cross or avoid in order to get to campus, but in reality it’s actually probably only 10 minutes of a bike ride to campus.
I don’t know too much about East Davis, so I can’t really comment on that. You may want to check out Lexington Apartments, as student housing has a contract with them to house transfer students. Plus it’s right next door to In N Out! :)

North and South Davis are your best bets for apartments because of their proximity to grocery stores and local eateries, but places like Sycamore Lane and University Court are just minutes away (by walking) from campus, so give them a good look as well. Personally, I live in North Davis and take the bus to campus (It’s about 10 minutes by bus from North Davis to the bus depot on campus). I’ve been in N Davis for the past two years and have renewed my lease. I just love how everything is so close by. I have a Savemart on one side of the street, a Safeway a little further on the other side, Jamba Juice, Quickly, McD’s, etcetc, and I don’t even have to drive! Anyhoo, before I continue to ramble…

Good luck!

as someone i know put it:

west davis is best davis

east davis is least davis

:D

Thanks, marzxbarz – that was helpful. I think I’ve decided to sublease a discounted studio/apt. over the summer and apply/search for places while I’m living down there. I’ve also realized, scouring through the daviswiki, that I should expect to pay ~$900 for a decent studio and >$1000 for a decent 1 bdrm. I’ll certainly check out the complexes you’ve recommended.

cutieflutie - I’ll try and confirm that for myself. But I don’t have very high standards. I’m ghetto friendly, so east Davis might suit me if it is in fact “the least Davis.” Being near the Farmer’s market would be great (I think it’s on the east side).

I personally don’t like West Davis much,it’s good to go to for parties but to live there I just think it feels way to far from campus. They did just open up a new supermarket though in West Davis, so that probably helps on the inconvenience factor a little. Most of my friends who currently go to UC Davis live in North Davis, probably because there are a million apartment complexes all in close proximity to shopping and the bus line comes like every 2 seconds. Central Davis is pretty much sandwiched in between North Davis and campus(University Court and Sycamore Lane are in Central Davis). If you are looking into downtown and are able to find a place you will be in close proximity to both the farmer’s market, food co-op and campus. Umm I have to agree though with cutieflutie08, east davis is just blah, there isn’t much on that side of town so it most of the time seems dead and boring to me. As for South Davis I can’t comment much on it, I’ve only been on that side of Davis a few times also to look at apartments. Also are you looking into single rooms as well as whole studios/1 bdrms. If your budget is 800ish dollars you should definitely be able to find a good sized master bedroom with it’s own bath for under your budget, if you don’t mind having housemates.

^ I’m trying to stay away from roommates if at all possible. I just can’t handle the drama.

I actually have ~$1300 in monthly “allowance” for the main 3 quarters. But I’m unsure about FA in the summer… I’ll get an estimate on tuesday after I register.

Ideally, I would live in a campus run apartments – but they are so booked and exclusive that I don’t want to expend the energy.
