I was just accepted as a transfer to AU and I will be starting in January. I currently live in Florida, so it is a bit of a challenge to find resources on good apartments. I am looking for a studio/1 bedroom apartment that is within walking distance to the school and is not too pricey.

The Berkshire seems to be a popular location for AU students, but it has pretty poor reviews. Anyone have any experience with this complex or any other suggestions?

My d lives at the Berkshire. It is a typical college complex although not as noisy as she expected. Her apartment was really roomy. And the location is great. You can probably find cheaper sublets on craigs list.

Thank you for your response! The reviews that I have been reading on the Berkshire have really frightened; I can deal with an outdated gym or an old building, but I really don’t want to have bug problems. Does your daughter have a problem with roaches or bed bugs? The location is really perfect and the price isn’t too bad either, so I really would like to live there.

Remember, in real estate, location is EVERYTHING and Berkshire is
literally across the street from the school. As the above poster stated, the rooms are large and regarding the bug problem, not too many roaches “come out to play” during the winter. As a Floridian, you should be okay around bugs…
Since you will be starting class in under a few weeks, your alternatives
are minimal at this time.
ALSO-
If you care to chance it, the AU web site has a section for current students wishing to sub-lease their apartment while they take the semester off and at least this way you will have a spot until you have the opportunity to get a feel for the area.

Yes, there are bugs in the Berks. However, my D had mice in her dorm room last year. This is a city - and student housing at that (food is around so rodents do come out). There is also a building across the street from the Berks that I heard is nicer but more expensive. Perhaps someone on this site knows the name.

The nicer and pricier one across the street is the Avalon at Foxhall. I lived both there and the Berkshires, and my bug problem in the Berkshires wasn’t really that bad. I preferred it over the Avalon as I didn’t feel like I was constantly being nickeled and dimed by the management, which has recently shifted from barely tolerating students to viewing them as group of fairly naive open wallets.

Other options in the area include Idaho Terrace, which is about 20 minutes up the road (and accessible by bus in cold/inclement weather), and plenty of people in the nearby McLean Gardens condominium community rent out basements or entire units to college students. Plenty of people who live in houses close to the school will also rent out rooms/units/basements to students if you do a little searching - looking a bit closer to the Spring Valley area will get you a lot these sort of places that are still well within walking distance to the school, and the AU law school is located near that area so they run frequent shuttles to the main campus as well. I also recommend the off-campus housing website that Housing and Dining Programs runs since the people who post there are specifically looking for AU students so it tends to be easy.

D doesn’t complain about bugs too much. They come out if dirty dishes are left in the sink - but it’s not like they’re crawling everywhere. No word about bedbugs, though. Compared to where I lived during my undergrad years at Northwestern - the Berks is pretty sweet.
