How much would I be expected to pay per month for an apartment near campus and what areas should I be looking at? I will be attending Owen, so I'd prefer in that area. Also what are utility costs generally?

If you want to be within walking distance, check out the Village at Vanderbilt which is just off 21st. If you want to just be within 10-15 minutes, The Grove is a large complex where lots of Vanderbilt grads & grad students land. Neither is cheap, but the amenities are nice. Rental offices could give you info on typical utility bills.

It really depends on how picky you are & whether or not you will be sharing your place with someone else. My D lives behind the Commons in a pretty decent two bedroom condo. It’s a very safe area, which was important to us. She can walk to campus, saving parking charges. She pays $700/month, which includes free washer/dryer use, parking, water, trash. Electric is about … not sure … I just texted D to find out but she didn’t respond yet! Cable and internet are not included, so those would be extra & depend on what type you choose.

You can find a place on Acklen for less, but she was an undergrad & they weren’t renting to undergrads in that area. Village at Vanderbilt is pretty expensive, but has a pool & maybe other amenities … it was more than we wanted to pay, so we didn’t look into it all that much.

Look on Craiglist, and Vandy also has an off campus list on the housing website.

I am looking at apartments on State Street. $750 a month furnished, with utilities included. Good, bad? Would Acklen be much cheaper?

Will you be near Baptist Hospital? I don’t know too much about that area. That is a good price for a furnished place (hard to find) including utilities. I did check with my D, and her electricity ranged from $30-$80/month (inexpensive when split between two).

I think some of the places on Acklen rent for less, but you generally get what you pay for … you probably won’t get find a furnished place, and I don’t believe utilities are included in the prices I have seen. You can get a really good sense of general pricing by watching Craigslist, and Vandy has good info: https://apphost1a.its.vanderbilt.edu/housing/Main/; https://medschool.vanderbilt.edu/registrar/housing. You can also look at Belmont University’s off campus housing listings.

Yes right on the Northeast side of the narrower portion of the hospital. I’m only going to be here 10 months for the program so I don’t see a need to buy furniture + I am coming from the West Coast

What did you end up deciding? I think the $750 is a good deal for a furnished apartment with utilities. Are you male or female? I would guess males may be more comfortable walking around that area after dark (it is just a bit off the general path), but of course it is ALWAYS important to be aware & careful of your surroundings.

Are you looking for the bare minimum? “Music City Hostel” by Cafe Coco offers fully furnished singles for $625 a month with all utilities and Internet included with month-to-month leasing (just a 3-month ahead security deposit). I stayed there my senior year and was happy with the price and amenities.
