I sent my application as a transfer in at the end of October and sent my transcript soon after. Online status is still the usual "thanks for applying...send in all materials..." I've called plenty of times and most recently she told me that the review committee has my application. Any idea when I should hear something? If I understand right, I'll receive an emailed notification of whether or not I got in before anything else?? Thanks.

There is no email notification. The website updates your status when the committee reaches a decision. Good luck.

I was in the same position with my son, I suggest calling. Only then did we know that they never received his transcripts though they had been mailed weeks ago!! His counselor ended up overnighting them.....its a good idea to call, for all you know they are still missing things. I have heard once they do have everything it can be anywhere from 1-6 weeks!! Good luck.

also you typcially find out online first, then an email a week or so later and then your packet and congratulatory letter.

I've called several times. Most recent thing they told me is that the review committee has the application. I'm just not understanding why my application status still hasn't changed. This is driving me crazy. This along with finals at my current college is making this a stressful week. Hope to hear something from IU soon...

Ok I spoke to admissions just now and they told me the review committee still has the application. She said it should be about a week before I hear anything so hopefully she's right.

Ok, well it's been over a week and still my status has not been updated. I've been checking literally 30x a day. I'm going to call later on and see if they can tell me what's going on...

My status hasn't changed in a while either, so I just called a few days ago... I applied october 18th... they said my application was under "final review" and that I should get my decision shortly.

Ok, looks like the woman I spoke to last week was wrong...
I just spoke to admissions again and they told me that they weren't going to look at the fall 08 apps until they finished with all of the Spring apps. She said I wouldn't hear anything until the middle of January. This is disappointing because I feel as though they were just trying to get me off the phone before by giving me a quick answer...this doesn't seem like a big deal but I've really been stressed over this lately and I really don't need to be spun in circles by them right now.

Well, I know its frustrating, but at least you'll probably have a decision by late January.

In California, things are even more frustrating for transfer applicants--here's why:

If you are applying for a 4-year school, there is a state requirement that you must complete a "writing course"--which must be beyond the basic "English composition" requirement before you can be accepted. Since most students only find this out around the time they go to apply (usually in Nov/Dec), they then have to take the course during the Spring semester. Then they apply to the universities anywhere from November to February for admission the following fall semester.

The universities, by law, are not allowed to admit you until the writing course has been completed. This means that you will not be admitted until May at the earliest (after you completed the writing course and then send your transcript showing you passed the courses). Thus, many students who are great candidates and are almost obvious admits when they first apply in November must wait until May or even June for the envelope to come with their admit plans. Naturally this means they now are last in line for housing, last in line for signing up for courses, and they still don't know if their financial aid packages will be sufficient to cover their costs for another few months after that. It's a mess.

So while things seem delayed with your application to IU--just be glad you are applying to IU and not to some California university as a transfer.

A word of caution to those who continue to have their on-line status remain the same. It is important to contact the admissions office and double and triple check that they have received your test scores, transcripts etc.

My daughter applied in September, her school was mailed a return post card from IU in early Oct. stating they had received everything they needed, and daughter called Admissions in mid-Oct to confirm everything again. When she heard nothing by the third week in November yet another call uncovered that IU had lost her transcripts! We had to emergency fax them to IU --

My analysis is that the Admissions department was overwhelmed. Emails, faxes were never answered. Counselors tried to be helpful but failed to follow through. Thankfully all worked out well for us -- but make sure to check and re-check with IU.

Don't hold your breath. Son's friend just found out he was accepted and he applied in September.

Realistically, I doubt I'll find anything out until February. Very disappointing. I'm sure I'll keep checking it though just in case.

Stillllll checking every day...Can't reach anyone in the admissions office...This is wonderful... I hope I find out before class starts in the fall...

you'll find out this week. promise you. My friend just got accepted and was initially deferred, applied end of october. g'luck

normalguy88--IU reopens tomorrow I believe. I've always thought that most offices are closed during the winter break, and that may hold true for admissions as well.

Spoke to admisssions today. They stated that the reason it is taking so long is because they had to complete all spring applications before they could look at fall applications. They are now looking at the fall applicants so if anyone else is still waiting like I am, it shouldn't be too long...hopefully

That just doesn't make sense to me. I applied on November 11th, and even had problems with my counselor getting my SAT scores there and heard on December 28th. And I am starting in the fall....so they would have been also looking at the fall applicants....

Yea it doesn't make any sense at all. So far I'm very disappointed with IU. It doesn't seem like it's a big deal but this is my life on the line and they just seem to be blowing me off every time I call for info. I have other backup schools and have to make a decision at some point...

Normalguy, if I recall correctly, is a transfer student and not an entering freshman. That's the difference.
