Apoligizing? Urgent!

Hey guys,

Well the majority of schools I'm applying to RD require SAT II's and I've done poorly on the three tests I took in December. I received a 630 Lit, 610 Math II, and 600 US History. On the additional information section of the CA would it be appropriate to send something like this:

"To whom it may concern,

I know that college x require y amount of SAT Subject Tests. Unfortunately, during the December testing date when I took my SAT Subject Tests for the first time I was very ill. I just wanted to assure you that I will be taking the Math II and US History Subject Tests during the January testing date and will have the scores rushed.

Thank you"

Do you guys think that would work well? Should I get rid of the "to whom it may concern"?

I suggest telling them the truth: “I thought I could slide by without studying as hard as I know I should have and now have suffered the due consequences. I am writing you this letter to manipulate more time out of you by lying about my being sick.”

Truelove, I have to say that was incredibly helpful… Does the letter make me sound like a liar. I was sick during the test but I was also unprepared. Do you think I should tell them that I didn’t know that I had to take SAT II’s until December and took the test without being prepared?

Apologizing is used only when you have hurt another person. You have not hurt the university. You have hurt yourself. So, apologize to yourself for not studying and procrastinating (you could have taken the test many times by now, thus not making you fully dependent on you last abysmal score).

Ok… Well I have to say thanks for the help. What should I write in your opinion to inform the university that I will be taking the tests in Janauary (which is perfectly fine at every school I’m applying to.)

I think my comment was not “incredibly helpful”. It was “simply insightful”.

Waiting until December of your senior year to take the required tests shows you were unprepared for the application process, and then you took them without being prepared for the tests.

Rather than making an “I was sick” excuse, I’d recommend applying to some schools that don’t require SAT IIs.

Please note that I am scheduled to take such and such tests in January. They will be rushed ordered to you as soon as possible.

Ok thank you for the help TrueLove, I appreciate it.

Actually, remember that colleges get a lot of “I love you” messages and the bushy-tailed, “I know I could have done better, but-” stuff.
This is where your GC comes in. IMO. That is who should write, look his/her scores don’t reflect the college potential; he was sick; his hs performance outshines what standardized tests reveal.

You bet, good luck.

That is a great point lookingfoward - unfortunately my GC is nonexistant.

Many colleges will allow you to take/submit the SATII later than the rest of your application. I would e-mail admissions and say that you were simply unaware of the SATII requirement and rushed to take a few tests at the last moment. Say it would be a better reflection of your ability if you could submit scores from the January test date, and ask if that is acceptable.

It’s very important to ASK if this is acceptable. Don’t simply assume and say “I will be sending you my January test scores”.

^ glue and scissors? :)

UVA, you mentioned in a previous thread that Boston College already accepted you EA. Wouldn’t you have submitted to them your original SAT II scores?

Some schools have January testing deadlines; others have theirs in December. If the schools you are applying to have December deadlines, however, I think this is your best advice:

But be prepared: the reply may not be forgiving. You have had all of high school to prepare for these exams; being unprepared for the last possible testing date does not look good.

Jshain, I took the tests in December and just got the score back. I believe I recieved my acceptance before I even got the scores back.

For BC it is either SAT and 2 subject tests OR ACT with writing. Do not send in any emails to colleges. Send in your December scores and take the January SAT subject tests and send those in too. They have thousands of applications to read and they do not ‘wait’ to read your file for your updated scores even if you do email them that you are testing in January. Note that January is the latest date for subject tests for some schools. For most though it is December to be sure the scores are in your file for their first read.
