App asking to list other schools applied to

Frequently, somewhere on an application it will ask what other colleges the student is applying to. I'd be interested in opinions on this. Do you leave it blank? Bare it all and list all other schools? List only some? List tough schools only, list easy schools only? What's the strategy here and what's the reason they ask? Just what is admissions trying to determine by asking this?

I think they're trying to determine what kind of schools you're aiming for, and where their particular school falls on that list. That way, they can tell how likely you'll attend the school if accepted. E.g. I know that Rice asks this question; if I'm applying to Rice and CHYMPS, there's a lower chance of me going to Rice if I'm accepted anywhere else vs. Rice + UT's only.

List it all. Why not?

Different schools probably look at it in different ways.

I think you're over-analyzing this. The school just wants to know where else you're applying -- this answer will not make or break your admission decision. Just put the honest truth; schools generally know if they're reaches, matches, or safeties for the average applicant.
