im confused. are there two prompts that we HAVE to respond to, or are there 3 that we HAVE to respond to? I'm not sure if we're supposed to spilt the 1,000 words between either to or three essays. thanks

You'll need to respond to all three of them. One of them you'll have to write 600 words for, if my memory serves. Most applicants write for the third essay, if they're still the same, which I think they are. The other two essays are about 200 words each.

Right now, there are two essays on which you have 1,000 words, split however you want with the caveat that the smaller essay still has to be a minimum of 250 words.

There is an additional space where you may write anything you want about your academic record or clarify anything confusing on your application.

you respond to TWO hibiscuspink...I believe one is for transfer students only...the first one is >250 palabras (the one about the world you come from)...the other one is <750 words (talent/achievment/characteristic question)

Oh wow the new essay topic sounds nice for Freshman. It still sucks for transfers though :( I didn't even get my first internship till end of junior year!

There was an article a while back in the daily bruin about the new essay prompts and about how the way they were worded was suppose to enhance the university's abilities (at least for ucla and cal that profess to using it) to select students based on their "comprehensive review" policy

I figured as much. It sounded like the essays allowed for more of a "comprehensive review." Doesn't help transfers tho!

Damn, dontcha. Tone down the attitude. I was responding without realizing they had changed it up. Honest mistake.

Prompt #1 (freshman applicants)

Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
Prompt #1 (transfer applicants)
What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.
Prompt #2 (all applicants)
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

is it true that you only have 40 minutes to finish your application online?

^...no. I don't even think they restrict how long you keep yourself logged on. Just turn it in before Nov. 30th and, if you DO turn it in Nov 30th, pray to God the server doesn't crash as always because they have no sympathy.

As long as you copy and paste your essays from MS Word or whatever, the entire application shouldn't take you 40 minutes to complete (contact information, courses, etc.).
