App question: 'College Level Courses'

The admissions office is closed today - and I think the phones will be ringing off the hook so i'll ask here.

On the 'Alternative Education' section, there is a question 'Have you taken any college level courses?'

I don't want to assume whether or not that includes high school AP classes. I haven't taken any outside college classes, but I have AP.

So...yes or no?

Thanks in advance, I'm subscribed to this thread so I'll see the answer.

No. they mean if you took classes at a community college or something

I agree, or it could be a concurrent ed class taken at high school. You should know if you took them.

AP is really a test, not a class. The classes themselves are just high school classes that can help you prep for the test. Some students dont take the test.

Dont worry though schools will look at your transcript and any honors/ap classes you have taken will add consideration to your app.

I agree with relarch and mitchklong. FYI, in addition to taking concurrent classes at a community college, many high school students enroll in summer classes at universities/colleges and earn college credit that way. For example, the University of Maryland has the Young Scholars Program. Everyone who enrolled in that has a transcript with a grade and 3 college credits that can be sent to any school they apply to.

An AP class does not give you a transcript separate/above and beyond your high school transcript. That is basically what they are asking for…do they need to be on the lookout for any additional transcripts to consider with your application.

Mitchklong is correct that taking an AP class in of itself does NOT give you college credit, but preps you for the AP exam which CAN earn college credit. If you take an AP exam and earn at least a 4 (sometimes minimum is 3), you can skip the equivalent class in college. For example, if you took Stat AP exam and got the minimum the university states is needed, you don’t have to take Stat 100, and the university will then count that as if you took it with respect to credits earned. It does not apply to your GPA, but frees up your schedule by one class, allowing you to take a higher level class sooner/knocks out a graduation requirement.

So, it is definitely to your benefit to take and do well on the AP exam because it does help with your college course scheduling. Here is the table to show you what score you need and what class it will count for at UMDCP.
Note that every university has different requirements and this table only applies to the University of Maryland.
