How are you filling out the question on the application to name other schools to which you're applying? Are you naming only comparable schools? Are you also including your high reaches?

How did those who are current Rice undergrads handle this question?

Well the intention is not to lie; however, it's really none of their business. What is the purpose for them to ask this? Rice is one of the schools my son is most interested in, but given that he's from Houston, will it give them the impression that he's applying to Rice as an afterthought if he's also applying to a number of highly selective schools far away from Houston?

You'll also note that the consensus on how to handle this question when it's been discussed on other posts about other schools' applications is that the question should be ignored if it's an optional question.

There is annother school I am applying to with this requirement and if I were to list all the other schools I am applying to, with the exception of my state school, they would know i was using them as a safety.

Rice, however is the only prestigeous school in Texas and they have to realize that a top applicant will apply to places outside of Texas to optimise chances of getting in somewhere good. If you really are Rice calibur, then aside from Emory and Vanderbilt and UVA, there are not too many top colleges in the south, and Texas isn't right next to these states either.

Also, asking where you are applying may help if Rice sees you are a top candidate and you are also applying to places like Harvard, causing Rice to maybe push money your way.

I believe they're just trying to find out which schools are their true competition. That would mean that they'd be thrilled to see other top schools on the list.

Son listed Harvard, Yale, Duke, W&L and Case. Rice responded with Trustees Scholarship. Rice considers HYP, Stanford and Duke to be its peers will not shy away from the competition.

^Should I list HYPSMCaltech and all the other Ivys/Top schools to increase my chance at a scholarship versus listing no schools or schools that are bellow Rice in prestige/acceptance rate?

be HONEST... if they ask for where you applied, then do so

Im gonna be blunt (general statement) - If you suck and apply to Rice and list "HYPSMCaltech and all the other Ivys/Top schools:, they will think ur bs-ing them

Just write exactly where you applied.. I put some colleges that were peers and some slightly lower and even my safety

i think if they think you are in serious competition for all places they will help you

But venkater, if you are applying to "HYPSMCaltech and all the other Ivys/Top schools" and "schools that are bellow Rice in prestige/acceptance rate?" list them ALL....

to anyone, dont add 'prestigious "Ivy"' league colleges to make it look better...

NOTE: The lines in quotes are to be read with dripping sarcasm

Yes, I was being sarcastic. I doubt my chances of getting into Rice, let alone getting a scholarship. Also, a college like Rice has very few colleges considered better than it, so Rice may see lots of people listing the same colleges. I doubt it plays a big role in acceptances, but I would assume a college would rather admit a studnet who is applying to Rice as the only, or one of a few reaches, compared to a kid applying to many top colleges because it means the applicant is more likely to marticulate.

i disagree... one who has lessoverlaps would probably not be s good as an applicant in RD... most RD people at Rice have overlaps with many other colleges listed above that are prestigious.

I think it doesnt make much of a difference.. maybe they want to see how honest you are
