appalachian state

My D also has College of Charleston and East Carolina on her list. CofC would be in-state tuition which is a big advantage, however, after visiting CofC for the second time she felt the campus might be too small (not the population of students). I am sending out her merit package to ECU today. Does anyone know if ECU is generous with their OOS waivers?

How about Western Carolina Univ., very rural (but beautiful) location about an hour from Asheville, less than 10,000 students.

If the mountains are too cold, there's UNC-Wilmington on the coast. All the kids from here who attend love Wilmington.

I spent a summer at Western and was more than ready to get out by the end. The surrounding area is beautiful, but the campus is ISOLATED. It was pretty bad when we were fighting over who got to go to the Wal-Mart (the only other thing in Cullowhee).

Could you tell me more about Roanoke College? My son is accepted there and we will be visiting next month - to see the campus and for him to compete in a scholars program. My nephew went there for business, but my son is more interested in sciences. We are from the Northeast and I was wondering if it is mainly comprised of Virginia students and also wondering what the opportunities for research/grad programs are. Thank you!

Maiby, I can't answer your questions about research or grad programs except I know they do have a summer scholars program. I just tried to post my review but it didn't stick. Will start a seperate thread. Probably better then hi-jacking anyway.

Maiby, for some reason I'm not able to post my Roanoke review and you have not set up a pm ability. Can you pm me and send me your e-mail or set up for personal messages?

maiby, since I live not far from Roanoke College, I can cite info from students we know there. They have an excellent string quartet, they tend to invite in great speakers which adds to the cultural scene here, we know kids studying cello, playing lacrosse, and playing golf there. It is a very quiet but personal school. I have met a handful of people who are from VA there and also a handful of Pennsylvanians. It is rising in rankings. The campus is quaint and in a small conservative town that is very typical of SW VA towns..lots of locals who support their community there. The best science comment I can make is that our Docs two daughters were their valedictorians and now are both physicians..one was valedictorian of her Medical School and one is now teaching at Medical School..so I do think there is power in small classrooms if the school suits your S or D's personal needs. It is clear that they were ready for their MCATs and sometimes I think larger school can lose some students with jumbo labs and curved exams etc.

My son would definitely run at Roanoke so we are looking forward to meeting the coach and seeing the area. He also applied to LACs in the Northeast but won't hear anything until April. My nephew went to Roanoke for business and his friend from there is now doing a residency at Stanford after going to UVA medical school.

Here it is -- <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=175447%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=175447</a></p>

It has become impossible to search for these for some reason. I think they may have all been taken off the main grid when CC set up the College Visit Report part of this website. If that was the rationale, it was a mistake -- the old "Master List of Pointers to Trip Reports" or whatever we called it contained info on a lot of schools that are nowhere to be found on the new College Visit thread.

Thank you Iderochi. I'm guessing they might have eliminated that thread thinking that most of those reports are now up in the College Visits section. I have asked Roger Dooley the administrator, several times if I could post trip reports from Roanoke, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and Champlain college in Vermont. Last fall he agreed that he would add them to the list in the College Visits section. I check every few weeks and I still can't add them. I find it very frustrating that these small (well, Kutztown is not real small) colleges are not getting the recognition they deserve.

Does anyone know how their business and econ departments are? Thinking of applying to Appalachian State as a fall back school - looking for something in the South with a student population of 5,000 to 20,000. Welcome any other suggestions folks may have.
