We have a few tours coming up. What is appropriate for my son to wear on a college walking tour? Thanks!
Anything comfortable. Shorts and a t-shirt is fine. (Sneakers are probably a good idea for all the walking!)
No holes, clean, no cleavage for girls, comfy shoes. Really, unless he strips naked and runs through a sprinkler, his attire won’t be noticed. He should be sure to sign it at admissions for his tour so they know he was there.
:))
Comfortable is paramount. Shorts and a t-shirt or polo shirt is fine. Sneakers are fine. Other than that anything that is basically clean and neat - -meaning no huge rips/tears in clothing, no offensive sayings on shirt etc.
I would avoid a t-shirt for a different school.
Otherwise, be comfortable.
Consider:
a. Comfort and suitability for weather and activities.
b. Properly fitting, clean, neat, non-distracting (e.g. offensive sayings), and will stay that way through the day.
c. If an interview with the college is included at the end of the tour, pay particular attention to b above.
No T-Shirts. Wear a golf shirt or a collared casual shirt.
Nonsense. Tees and other casual wear work fine for tours, where you’re trotting around in a group led by a student who couldn’t care less how you’re dressed, as well as for info sessions, where you’re sitting a room with a bunch of other teens, all basically anonymous. Nobody will notice or care what you wear. If you have an interview, ramp it up to a collared shirt.
Shorts or jeans (no rips) depending on the weather. T-shirt, polo, sweater, whatever’s appropriate for the weather. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
Agree, t-shirts are fine almost all the time. Your guide may very well be wearing one, too (D1 still fondly remembers the guide’s “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” shirt from one tour). But I agree that t-shirts from other schools or with offensive sayings are off limits. And at many schools a plain colored t-shirt would even be find for an interview. A few southern schools seem to be a bit dressier. But for most schools, you don’t need to dress up.
My D dressed up a bit for the first tour we went on because we had no idea what to expect. She had her name checked off by a receptionist and that was the last time anyone asked who she was. Obviously she could have dressed in anything and it wouldn’t have mattered. After that she just went in comfortable in jeans/shorts and t-shirts except for the schools where she had pre-arranged meetings with professors where she dressed up a bit nicer.
Do you plan to meet with anyone at admissions while you are visiting?
No need to dress formally. But a golf shirt and nice shorts are preferable to a tee shirt, gym shorts and a hat on backwards.
