Huh...seems a bit different from here in Vermont. Most people I know want to get as far from here as possible. UVM's practically begging for in-state applicants these days.

Soccerstar: I go to Rollins in Winter Park.

This sounds incredibly familiar. I live in FL too, and anytime that I tell people that I'm only applying to UF as a safety, I always get "Well what about Bright Futures?!" as if there is no other scholarship money in the world other than what the state provides or "Why would you ever want to leave FL and go up to the cold?!". Yes, I could go to school in FL for 100% free, but there are limited opportunities here in what I'd like to do. It's hard explaining that to people who barely know what the application deadlines & requirements are. Most people end up at an HBCU, UCF, UF, FSU, or community college. They don't bother to apply OOS because the money from Bright Futures attracts them more. Shame on me for wanting a little more from my education :/

^ Amen to that....I live in NY and I would never apply to a SUNY except as a last resort if it was a SUNY or no college.

There's really no problem going out-of-state, especially if you live in IOWA. I can sort of see why people might look at you poorly for doing so, though; they apparently don't have the opportunity to attend the big colleges in big cities.

I live in California and I thought of applying OOS before but figured since in-state people get priority and that financial aid doesn't really cover OOS schools, I decided against it. Luckily for me, the UC schools are some of the best out there.

^Michigan has always been a tad insular and out-of-touch with reality about it state schools just a tad... It is pretty rare for a medium-sized, non-trendy state to have 2 such highly regarded public Us like Michigan so, for some, for the educational and low-tuition advantages, many think it's foolish to leave the state... but then again, they should realize that college is a personal thing and 1 size doesn't necessarily fit all -- or in the case of MSU & U-M, 2 sizes...

My school pushes us to apply oos, although most people end up at either LSU, Ole Miss, Bama, Tulane, or Loyola (yes, I realize the second and third are oos, but they don't count).

But I'm in a really small private school, so we're pushed to "do our best." Mind you, I have no desire to stay here for college.

I'm in Texas, and most people at my school either go to community college, Texas A&M, or UT, and when I tell people I'm not going to any of those they're like "BUT THEN WHERE'RE YOU GOING???!!!1". I tell them I'm applying to a bunch of schools out of state and they start asking me why I want to. I tell them I hate Houston and Texas b/c it's so boring, and at first they seem all defensive but then realize that what I said is true. It's pretty funny.

oh yeah and when I say I want to go to NYU, some people don't even know what it stands for... lolll

I'm surprised people say that others feel that way about Michigan. Around here, people are just dying to get out...

Yeah, on this site everyone seems like they're dying to get into Michigan. I honestly don't think it's that hard of a school to get into. Then again, I live about 30 minutes south of the OH/MI border, so they might have some special admissions thing set up to lure decent students away from OSU. :P

Regardless, I wouldn't ever want to go to Michigan. Ann Arbor is interesting for like 30 minutes. Then you get hit by a truck because it's the Bad Driving Capital of the World. Plus, if there is one state more boring than Ohio, it's Michigan.

My high school is the main school in one of Michigan's "under represented counties" (according to U of M) so this year they are accepting people from my school left and right and they are giving free rides for anyone who gets accepted who lives in a single family home, who's parents make less than 60,000, are a minority, or who are first generation.

Michigan is interesting, it's just that the economy sucks.

Don't most of us live in homes with just one family?

single parent home....sorry
