Apparently I am not eligible to apply for National Honor Society ...

Upon searching through these forums NHS pops up frequently. I am going to assume that different schools have different eligibility requirements. I got a slip that said I was eligible to apply for NHS yesterday, so I went to the meeting. Upon looking through the 30 page application I realized that indeed I am actually not eligible to apply since despite having a 4.5 gpa, (what I got the slip for) I also need to have 3 leadership positions, 20 service hours over the required amount for school, and a plethora of other extracurricular requirements. It's not like I sit at home doing nothing all day. I volunteer on the weekends. I taught myself 2 instruments. I'm in various clubs (the reason I don't have leadership positions in any of these due to my not being popular and therefore not being voted for, trust me I tried). I know this sounds angsty, but is NHS really worth it or is it just another "honor" to make a certain group of kids feel special.

It’s not really a big deal to colleges. If you’re not eligible, don’t worry about it. Do something else instead.

NHS is a dime a dozen. Dont worry about it.

It depends on your school whether it’s just a name or if it’s actually an organization. It’s what you actually do for any given club that counts.

You volunteer for something on weekends? I’d still apply. The application my son received said teachers vote on the applications without seeing the name of the student. I realize different schools have different rules. Do you need to write an essay about leadership? You could write something to the effect that leadership is not a popularity contest; it’s leading by example and list the ways you lead. It is so common it’s not a big deal but it’s still nice to have an extra “thing” for your college application. IMO maintaining a 4.5 GPA is showing great leadership. Good luck.

There isn’t a single essay in the entire application. It says to list leadership positions and the required number needed. Everything is a list. A list of clubs. A list of sports. You get points for however many things you have listed in each category and how high your gpa is. Whoever has the most points gets in, but even if you have more points in one category and you’re missing a required zone you still can’t get in.

3 Leadership positions? That’s a little crazy, never heard of that. But it does differ from school to school but you shouldn’t feel too left out if you don’t get in because at some schools (mine included) the standards are rather low and people who get in are just lol.

But send in an application anyway, who knows?
