I applied to Pennstate as an international applicant for the spring semester. I’m very keen on joining university park because i love the campus and a friend of mine deferred his previous year fall application to join in spring. I applied for the premed major (I should’ve known it would be competitive but didn’t). I was quite confident at first cause I have almost perfect high school grades till my final year of IBDP in which my final board exam grades weren’t as high because of a extenuating circumstance which I hadn’t mentioned in my application (I had a surgery which cost me around 2 months of classes). I have 780/800 in my SAT math section anda 570 in CR. I also have a 8/9 for IELTS. When i called them up they mentioned that this year they had taken an excessive number of applicants in fall and have very limited seats for spring. And like they said today I received an offer for the 2+2 program hence I was rejected to University Park for premed. I really wanna get into university park and will not be joining any other campus. I wanted to know whether an appeal would work if i mentioned my surgery and how I wouldn’t mind joining for summer if my application is accepted. Should I also ask to change my application to undeclared major or a bio major instead of premed as well?
Any help would be appreciated as I REALLLLY wanna get in. Would an appeal work and any advice so i can get in.(I’m very disappointed cause several others with much lower scores got in in Fall and I really want to join )
Thankyou
Without commenting on the specifics of your situation, I think the problem is that they really don’t have room. More freshman decided to attend this year than they expected so they were actually trying to convince people who were accepted to University Park to start at a branch campus by giving them big discounts on tuition.
^ Agreed. If I were you, I would just go for the 2+2 plan. There are several threads here that compare the pros and cons of the various satellite campuses.
Do you want the education or “the college experience”? The education at the branch schools is excellent. Sure, it’s a bit of a let down to not be at the main campus for two years, but you will be getting the degree you want. Try thinking long term.
I’m an international applicant and being Indian my parents are a bit strict. I don’t think I’ll be able to go for any other campus and I really wanted to get into UP. If i call them and they say no even after reviewing the letter my high school wrote regarding my grades dropping due to the surgery, should I appeal for the application to be considered for summer? Waiting an extra 3 months shouldn’t be a big deal as far as I’m sure I have a seat reserved . I’ve applied to only one university in US and the rest are UK med schools which im not sure I’m ready for.
So yeah the 2+2 plan is out of question for me Should i still call them and give it a shot? My only drop in grades was due to the surgery and it was just the 12th final exam. Also if they say there is NO way they can offer me a seat due to it being filled do you think I should appeal to join for summer?
You can get a Penn State degree, no matter if you start at branch campus or not.
You might even run out classes at the branch after one year. I think you can apply to transfer earlier in that case.
The advantages would be smaller classes. If you get high grades you might have better chances to get into PSU main.
Also you won’t have as much competition for hospital volunteering jobs in a smaller town.
Go straight to 'starting in the summer at up’if you’re serious about your appeal. In addition to summer session, indicating you’re undecided , IE., dus would help.
(BTW the 'premed" concentration is not medical in any way, it’s just what kids who can’t handle a normal major, but want to try for med school, end up with. Good premeds have a regular major plus the premed requirements.)
There just aren’t any space for spring even if your stats woukd work for fall.
