I would really really like to attend Purdue but the cost is just way too much even with the scholarships and grants I have received… I put in a special circumstances appeal because my dad lost his job recently so hopefully that will get Purdue to reconsider giving me more money but I have not heard back from them yet… I was wondering if I should go to them and sort of plead for more money even though on their DFA FAQ it says they do not negotiate aid… Is it worth the effort? I live out of state
Being OOS, I don’t think you’ll get enough to let you attend.

There’s your problem. Job or no job, Purdue isn’t going to suddenly pay what your parents should pay. You might get your FAFSA EFC reduced, but it may not be low enough to get some Pell money (which isn’t enough to pay for Purdue anyway).
What is your FAFSA EFC?
WHEN did your dad lose his job? March? Feb? April? Jan? When?
Your dad may soon find another job. Did he get a severance? Does your mom work?
How much will your parents pay each year??? How much WERE they going to pay each year before dad lost his job?
What is the net cost to attend Purdue (how much did you get in scholarships? How much were grants?)
Sorry, but Purdue won’t work out. Where can you go that’s affordable??
In another thread you mention that your other choices cost the SAME…so are you now saying none are affordable because dad is out of job??
What are your test scores and GPA?
Did you look at costs when you applied?
Purdue is a public Indiana school. As a non-resident, you aren’t paying Indiana taxes, so you have to be a full-pay student.
Where else did you get in that you can afford?
Edited to add:
What has changed from less than a month ago?
@mom2collegekids My EFC is $15,491 but that was when my mom and dad were both working (FAFSA had to be filed using 2015 info and that’s what hurt me so bad)
My dad lost his job about two years ago and is no longer receiving any benefits or severance pay. My mom is currently working.
I am not sure how much my parents were willing to contribute.
With all my scholarships and grants, it would cost around $29k a year to attend (this includes the fed sub/unsub loans)
My ACT is a 32 and my GPA is 4.3 last time I checked
Also, I was dumb and didnt fully realize the actual costs per year when I made that thread, my parents helped me read through my financial aid package and I made a mistake while reading them… oops
@“aunt bea” CWRU is my most affordable option if I choose to commute. I also got into OSU but that would cost me $23k a year (including fed sub/unsub loans)… I also submitted an appeal to OSU and i’m thinking about going to them and telling them that CWRU and Purdue are offering me way more and see if can offer me more?
I think that covered it all? Thank you for the help btw
When you say your EFC, is that your FAFSA EFC? Or the result of Purdue’s specific net price calculator in their website?
And they don’t care how much Purdue s offering at OSU; the cost of attendance comparison would matter more, and Purdue isn’t cheaper for you.
Can you afford CWRU? If so, you should go there.

Please give accurate info…losing a job 2 years ago is NOT recently.
Your EFC is too high for your family to get a Pell Grant.
Ok…You’re not sure how much your family will pay? What is going on in the household??? You all reviewed the aid pkgs…what did your parents SAY???
PLEASE…right NOW…ask them how much they’ll pay each year for college!!!
What is your home state?
If you apply NOW to UAH, you’d get free tuition. excellent for CS, STEM, eng’g, etc.
Being a CS major, they’d probably give you more than free tuition…probably free tuition from UAH, plus a few thousand from the CS/eng’g dept. with a student loan and parent contribution, you’d have all costs covered.
PLUS…UAH is located in Cummings Research Park…2nd largest research park in the nation…lots of internships and co-ops.
@intparent It is my FAFSA EFC
The only con about CWRU is that I heard that their CS (which is my major) program is kind of weak

How much does the family earn each year now…including any investment income?
Curious as to why you didn’t ask for an adjustment awhile ago???
Even with an adjusted EFC, Purdue still won’t be affordable. Pell Grants aren’t very big.
@mom2collegekids I live in Ohio and my parents said that they would be willing to pay the amount needed to send me to college but they want to pay the least amount needed (sorry this is a vague answer, they would not explain/answer me any further). And thank you for the suggestion, I will look into UAH…

So, your home state is ohio and you live in/near Cleveland. So, OSU is instate. They’re not going to care that an OOS public and a private Univ offered more to cover their HIGHER costs. You already get a big OSU discount for being instate.

What is the net COST if you attend CWRU (include books, fees, transportation costs, flex dollars, etc). What “free money” did you get from CWRU?
I’m a little concerned about CWRU because you’ll need a car, have car repairs, gas, etc…also to consider. Do you have your own RELIABLE car???
Frankly, I’m curious why someone with strong stats and a precarious financial situation didn’t apply to any affordable schools. Why didn’t you apply to any safety schools that you knew you could afford???
CW’s CS is just fine (and I know a couple of CS students there). You are worrying unnecessarily. You are lucky, in fact, to live near a school with a solid CS program that you can afford and you got into. Go to CW, try to get some internship experience that is CS related in the summers, and develop good relationships with a couple of professors so you have good reference options when you graduate. Keep in touch with older students in your major when you leave. You will do fine. Don’t waste your time worrying about other schools if their FA office doesn’t grant you anything on appeal.
And with a FAFSA EFC of $15K before your parent lost their job, your parents are kind to say that they will pay – but they CAN’T. And it would be irresponsible for you to ask your family to stretch like that when you have a good option.
I see students out here every spring with much worse choices on the table than you have.
Do we know if CW is affordable???
We don’t know is the aid awarded was based on living on campus. Once the student changes to “commute”, some of the aid may go “bye bye”.
Ah, that is a fair point. He said it was affordable, but that detail was not discussed.
@mom2collegekids CWRU gave me $20,500 as a scholarship, $2,500 as work study, and $20,270 as a grant so that would leave $5k in tutition if I commuted and $20k if I lived on campus. The net cost of CWRU is about $66k
I applied to University of Akron sort of as a safety school and they offered me nearly full tuition but it is my LAST resort to attend there
@intparent Thank you! I think I am just so caught up on Purdue and it’s a little disheartening to understand that it is not wise to attend there.
I want to drive a Jaguar, too. But I try not to let it bother me. My Subaru gets me around just as well.
@intparent Haha yes! Purdue was the first college I visited so I had that initial awe but I am slowly warming up to the idea of Case. All that debt is not something I am interested in. But just a quick question, would OSU reconsider aid if I mentioned how much I am receiving from Case despite Case being a private school?
You can ask. But I wouldn’t count on it. If you can offer some change in your financial situation that is not shown in your original financial aid paperwork, you might have a shot.

When you applied, did you indicate that you’d be living on campus??? Or commuting???
That grant may ONLY be good if you live on campus. Once the school finds out that you’re commuting, they will likely REDUCE that grant.
That grant was based on a much higher COA.
