I just got rejected this noon, I called, and the admission advisor told me I've completed all the requirement, the reason I got rejected is because they think "my GPA is not that competitive in UCLA applicants". I plan to write an appeal, and want to see is there anyone else at similar situation. or, Any suggestions and advices will ALL HELP! Thank you all.

My status

International student currently in a CC

Major: Art History

GPA: 3.28 ----Yep, I know that's the reason.

Applied: UCB(pending), UCLA(rejected), UCSD(pending), UCSB(pending)

Pre-requests: All completed

TAG: Nope

Extracurricular: Web Designer for a Performing Art Club (2009), Art Museum Internship (in China, 2009), Year Book Editor/School Weekly (in high school, China 2008)

Others: A published book (novels and photography all by myself, published in China,2008),

About my grade

I got 3.75 in the 1st semester, bc I used to be an art major, and did pretty well on them

After I finally put my major in art history and decide to transfer UCs, I began to take GE classes, and they pull my grades down----It makes them think Im doing worse and worse in classes, the advisor says "the last 9 grades pull your GPA down".

Art History Major requires 4 classes: 2 As, 1 C(..I know), 1 in progress

1D (replaced) and 4Cs: ESL33b, sociology psychology, art history

Twice used "C/NC": philosophy, ESL33a, all passed

Congratulations for all Pending Team ppl who got admitted (especially Jane, even you don't remember me, we all know you, haha!); I hope all the others pending guys will hear your good news; and for all of whom got rejected like me----be optimistic! Life is tough, but we could be tough, too.

I read somewhere in other threads, and some people got accepted to UCLA with lower than 3.3. However, considering your status as an international student, that may be why they rejected you.

Further more, having 3.75 in your major courses shouldn’t be considered as “did pretty well”. I am sure most of us here Aces our majors courses easily without sweat at the community college level.

Finally, I don’t mean to discourage you but I don’t think it worth it to appeal to UCLA especially if the problem is your GPA. Search around for other threads, you will see people with 3.8+ got rejected left and right; therefore, if you think you have something better than those people with high GPA to hide your GPA then go for it. Its better to try and fail than fail to try. :)

I thought you needed “new evidence or circumstances” to appeal a decision? I would think that if they rejected your application the first time, they would reject your appeal if there isn’t anything new.

@argothiusz
I’m pretty sure its the other way around, that the UCs are more willing to accept internationals since they pay alot more tuition.

@argothiusz
Thank you for your honest. I’m thinking the same thing “does it worth to appeal” in my mind. Since my GPA has been stable, nothing could be new in my appeal. What if I emphasis that I’m making progress? (It sounds stupid, I know) How do you think about it

@rawfulmao
“new evidence or circumstances” - Yes, I have not. What if I ask my English teacher to write me a recommendation saying how she see my improvement in her class ect. ect.? Bc I am doing obvious improvement, in English writing since I came here. I got low Cs on ESL classes, and got B/B+ in English classes. Could it stand for a “new evidence”?

@mikei
I know the case that UCs are accepting more and more international students, but also I heart my sociology teacher’s saying they will cut the number this year.

@shin
Well I’m not sure how much consideration they would give for letters of rec, but probably not much. I think your best bet would be if your GPA improved noticeably from the time you applied till now. If you’ve been getting 3.8-4.0 the past few quarters then you may have a case for appeal. Just my opinion.

I think you should do it. No harm, right? Can you think of ANYTHING else that would make you an attractive candidate? life hardships during school or anything? if you can add it, and, yeah, I wish you luck.

the appeal is for NEW COMPELLING evidence. You’d be essentially be appealing with the exact same application you got rejected with unless you have something that wasn’t in your original application to bring up.

I really don’t think you stand a chance at all with that appeal. There is never any harm in trying, but you really don’t have any new and compelling information to present. If you only did well in your major courses and not your GE courses, you are not that strong of an applicant. The UCs want students who are well rounded and have knowledge in different fields of study (not just your major).

I also have similiar situation as OP… hopefully you guys can help me out !!

I was from OOS 4 years university with first semester GPA of 0.89… (Music Major) 4 music classes…all F and D’s, unfortunatly, my OOS does not have AR…

After I got out and started attend CCC … I only got A’s and B’s… well 2Ws’

But that semester grade pulled my whole GPA, supposely 3.58 without that semester, but 2.8 with it… I am applying for Asian Humanities btw…

When I called them, they simply said that my first semester at the OOS GPA pulled my whole GPA down…

I did not mention any hardship / reasons of getting those grades on my app. and my GPA for spring semester will be 4.0 also started / found an organization that helps people who went through tragedy…etc.

What you think the chances of appeal will be?!

@shinn
and honestly, your major (which is ART) has only 4 prereqs? My major has 14 prereqs and they are all science/math classes and I managed to get an A-/A gpa average. Trust me and Peter86…ucla does not want you.

I am in a similar situation. I was told by a UCLA Admission officer that I was rejected because my GPA was not competitive even for my Women’s Studies major.

The thing is that I really truly just want to attend UCLA and graduate at the end of spring quarter. I want to not only be done with school but also I want to graduate with my class. I originally wanted to take Communications as it pertain to my career field, but the major is too competitive. I went then to Sociology to Women’s Studies because it’s like a sub topic of Socio but emphasizing the female perspective; also, I only need to take 13 classes in order to graduate. Thus, I can graduate within 1 year.

So in the letter, I am going to explain why my GPAs is low (took some random classes that really killed me) and also explain my plan. I originally told them that I have accepted a paid internship with WB in London for this summer, but I have decided to take 2 summer classes at UCLA for my major to show how dedicated I am to my plan. Then in Fall, I will declare my emphasis and take remaining classes in the next 2 quarters (4 classes each quarter), which I will be set to graduate.
