Appeal help

So my friend (who is extremely close to me so don’t condemn me for asking about her issue) did not get admitted into the four UC’s that she applied to (LA, cal, Irvine, Davis). She did get waitlisted at irvine however. She is now freaking out about what to do next. It seems her family only wants the UC’s as a college option, as they did not allow her to apply for CSUs and community college was also out of the question for them. She recently went to the admissions office at davis but they said they couldn’t do anything to help. She is going to irvine admissions tomorrow to try the same thing. Is there anything she can do to have irvine (which I believe is her best shot) to reconsider their decision? If so what other alternatives can she do? What can she say to the admissions office to convince them that she is fit for their school? I am really worried about her guys she is very smart and very active in school. Her SAT may not show it because not everyone is good at testing but her GPA is a little over 4.0 weighted and that’s in IB classes. I read her personal statement and it was near perfect. Please give suggestions for this issue, thank you so much.

Tell her to research UCI appeals. Irvine is less reluctant than the other UCs about appeals. To do one, she needs to present compelling information that shows why she should get into UCI that wasn’t present in her application. They want NEW info. I’m going through the same issue right now. Tell her good luck.

There is really nothing she can do but present any new information to sway UCI to revisit her application. It is really unfortunate her parents were inflexible with their expectations and not allowing her to apply to more Match schools??? If this is true, then it really is not her fault so her parents need to be willing to be more understanding and let her consider a CC for 2 years and then transfer to a UC.

You are being a good friend but the situation is out of your hands.

One other option would be GAP year where she could possibly get some work experience, more volunteer work and retake the SAT to try again next year.

What is an example of new info? And thank for your responses everyone!

Medical problem/Family issues affecting grades/test scores not originally disclosed in the original application, dramatic increase in GPA, missed documentation or inaccurate reporting of grades, major awards won after application deadline etc… could all be examples of new and compelling.

Also can she appeal at any time or is there a set time where she can do so? Like can she just walk in tomorrow with her appeal letter? Is it better to email or do it personally?

Sorry to hear about your friend. It must be really hard for her, but that’s very nice of you to be looking out for her!
