Appeal Letter

Hello,

I’ve decided to write an appeal letter to UCSB (I was waitlisted). However, I’m not really sure where to start. Any advice?

** For an appeal to have merit, it must bring to light new information that was not present in the application—information that clearly shows the student to be stronger overall than had been earlier evidenced. **

So what is the basis of your appeal and what kind of documentation can you present to support your appeal?

Appeal stats for 2019:
Appeals submitted: 718
Admits: 47

Whenever I submit my appeal on the portal it takes me to a page that says “You have encountered an application error. Staff have been notified and will try and resolve this issue as quickly as possible.” Is anyone getting this error too? What do I do? I emailed the admissions director and team and nobody is replying.

@yyu2002 I think the office is closed rn but I haven’t had any problems with my portal.

I had one small typo in my appeal letter. Will that affect my chances drastically? Also how much will rec letters help. And also I sent my AP scores to UCSB last October and they never got them and my portal still says missing. What is going on with this?

@Gumbymom (sorry that this is so lengthy) I made an account on here so I could pm you but unfortunately since this isn’t considered a junior account yet I can’t. So I guess I’ll just @ you on this thread instead. I see you have access to tons of statistics that I haven’t been able to find on my own and I was wondering if you could give me some numbers and advice. I’m specifically interested in admit rates off of rejection appeals for UCSB. I applied as a mechanical engineering major (with second choice physics which is in the college of ls). I’ve got tons of extra curriculars, a 1420 sat, 4.14 gpa (not the best) I’ve taken 8 aps and what not. The information that I left out of my application was that I’m also taking linear algebra and an engineering statics course at a local college and appealed presenting that new information. What do you think my chances look like for being admitted off of an appeal and/or would you mind sending me applicable statistics so I can try and gauge it on my own. Much appreciated! Sorry that this was so long and not my own thread either

@yyu2002 Many students have been submitting their appeals just fine no need to panic. Just take a deep breath and relax. Maybe its a sign that UCSB is not the right path for you?

@yyu2002 I saw that you were in the UCB threads and were an anxious wreck. Maybe UCB is the right path for you! If i were in your position I’d take UCB over UCSB 10 times out of 10. Congrats on UCB though!

@HonestTeaMom stop discouraging students from appealing to UCSB. That is all.
