Appeal Letters.

I was rejected from a school that I know is not out of reach for me. I have friends who got in and my scores on the SAT were higher. & I have a question about writing an appeal letter since counselors are very vague about this and I know I’m not supposed to be a master at writing appeal letters because that is not what they are looking for, but I just want to know what I should write, how long, etc. I have a GED so I understand that although colleges accept, they frown upon it. I received it due to some personal problems and felt that was the way to go for me. I didn’t wait five years to attain it either, in fact, I took it as fast as I could after leaving high school, which was 2 months after.

Any tips?

Move on.

A rejection is not even close to getting in. If you were close you might have gotten a waitlist letter.

Clearly it is not all about SAT scores. Your GED probably plays into it, as well as your GPA in the classes you did take. Its really not worth appealing an rejection. The better choice would be to reapply or try to transfer in at a later point, but its hard enough turning a waitlist into an acceptance. A rejection is pretty much a sign you should move on, at least this year.

that's great. but no thanks. i want someone who will really answer my question

Unless it's a school that has a policy that allows appeals, such as a UC where they are common, it will do you no good. At a school that invites appeals, you have to give info you didn't give in the first place or explain a hardship that has arisen since your application.

Even at UCs however, they overturn few decissions.

zagat's right..they really only overturn few decisions. plus..what you 'need'.is NEW information, like a scholarship that you got after yousent in your application, an internship where you published something. you need something really significant to win an appeal-appeals at uc's, however, are easier, because you get the added bonus of sending in a letter of rec that you didnt get to send in with the application.

SAT scores aren't everything and just because yours were a little higher than some of your friends, that does not mean your application was better..they rejected you, and not to be an ass, but they dont want you...

Many private colleges don't accept a GED in lieu for a HS diploma. All state schools will accept students with a GED.

Do you really want to go to a school that didn't want you in the first place?

I did answer your question and my answer was similar to what everyone else said. Sorry you didn't hear what you wanted to hear but you did get an answer.

appeals almost never work....unless when the college was reviewing ur application and somehow a recommendation letter was missing from the portfolio or something, then maybe your appeal will work, otherwise the rejection stands

I appealed to UCSD, but I did have a very compelling arguement, and I did include a little bit more about me that they didn't see in my application. However, it takes a lot of work and most likely, you won't get the answer you want. I guess I was lucky.
