Perhaps someone who understands UIUC better can give me insight into this.

I was rejected from CoB but admitted under DGS. I submitted an appeal to get into the College of Business. I don't particular expect anything good to come out of it. But I thought I might as well try. I already submitted my SIR to UCSB as I will be going there unless the appeal works.

But my question is, how does the appeal process work? Do they go over your original app once more and then take into consideration what you wrote in your appeal essay? Do they just look at the essay? Do they take into account numbers (i.e. limited space in CoB, many people choosing not to go because of tuition cost thus opening up room)?

Also, what exactly is new and compelling information? I just explained my sophomore grade drop (due to coming back after a semester at an overseas school), along with some EC that I left out on my original app.

:P UIUC's forum is usually not that active so thanks to anyone that replies

They will review the file again plus what was provided with the appeal. Unless there appears to be something of real importance that they overlooked when the initial decision was made, it will be affirmed and thus when they refer to new and compelling information they mean something that really renders the intial review questionable (e.g., they find out the transcript they relied on was in error and gave the wrong grades). The “numbers” have already been factored in when they made intial decisions, i.e., they made offers to a total number (usually for business somewhere in the 1150 range) which should result in enrollment in the range of the target enrollment number (usually between 600 to 650), and unless something has happened this year that has never happened, they will already have by May 1 the number of acceptances needed to produce desired enrollment and most likely somewhat more than desired enrollment (in other words don’t assume in the review process that they will be seeing that they really have more openings to fill because of people who declined admission; but for a real mistake in the intial evaluation they will reconsider regardless of openings).
