appealing financial aid

Im out of state and so as for all of us, i get basically no aid ($2500 a year). We have extenuating circumstances, however (my nine year old little brother is autistic, has a hearing loss, several other cognitive and physical things that cost a lot of money such as orthodics, diapers and that are NOT covered by insurance).
he will always be dependent on my parents and thus diminishes the amount of money that is available for my education

so, we want to appeal the no aid deal. my mom plans to write a letter, any advice? =/ i know there is no guarantee with this, but I want to do it as best I can.

Thanks for any thoughts!

may be there is a mistake?
Did you submit your fafsa on time?
What is your family income?
2500/year seems... a little too few to me.
I got $15xxx per year with a decent family income.

I didn't get anything from financial aid either. Just loans and work study, and my family also cannot afford the OOS tuition. Is it worth appealing (what are my chances?), or should I just cross Berkeley off my list and go to a school that gives better financial aid?

my family income was $101,000 this year. it was a bit higher the year before, but i've got a family of six with a sister also in college (will be a junior in the fall)

I really hope they help us out a bit more.. i'm pretty sure my fafsa was in on time- they never asked for additional paperwork or anything.

siukityu211 - are you OOS at well? wow is that 15xxx money you dont have to pay back? incredible. my mom sent an email yesterday and im submitting several scholarship apps weekly now, but its so difficult to actually win.

Hmm.. I'm also pretty sure I turned in FAFSA on time.

I talked to a friend's mom who appealed financial aid at like every school her daughter got into before they compared and picked a school, and she just said that it's best to tell the school every single reason that you should receive more aid (no matter how little, ridiculous, or seemingly irrelevant). She did get better offers almost everywhere, though she did not apply to very many public schools, so I'm not sure how different it is at Berkeley. Shalalalalala, you have plenty of convincing reasons to deserve more aid, so I'd guess you have a good shot, I just hope that the rumors about Berkeley accepting more OOS kids this year specifically because of our high tuition are false.

Best of luck. I hope they reconsider and throw some grants your way.

thanks.. i'm hoping so.
yeah those rumors are definitely making me lose hope on this..

that's awesome that it worked out for your friend, my mom tried to do that with uva for my sister two years ago and it failed (my dad made almost 50,000 more dollars that year though, and we didnt push it that much, she didn't really want to go there)

don't just cross berkeley off your list!! unless youve got mit or caltech on there, berkeley is so great! lol
