Hey everyone,
I was wondering what the process is to appeal for more financial aid. I really want to go to Georgetown, but at this point my situation is like this:
- I've been admitted to several other prestigious schools (Princeton, Yale, Harvard) which are offering me substantially more in need-based aid, and convincing my parents that Georgetown is "worth it" when they're asking us for 47,000 / year is proving difficult :( That amount basically makes it impossible for me to attend.
- Our financial situation is changing next year with estimated income for my parents decreasing significantly.

Could I use either of these to my advantage? ...would I write someone a letter? Would I use the fact that I have other competing offers as a reason why I want more (need-based) aid?

(All of the aid I'm being offered is need-based)

Thanks for any help you can give me. I really really want to go to the School of Foreign Service but the lack of aid is really getting me down :(

I don’t know if you could/should write any letters, but if you do, I really think you should include that you would be turning down Harvard, Yale, and Princeton in favor of them. I might be wrong but I heard that Gtown (and most other schools) become more “generous” when they find out that one of their applicants would be going to a rival college.

I too was offered an award that did not make attendance possible, though it’s nearly $50,000 in grant. But right after I received my award in an email from an Associate Dean, I emailed her back explaining that I will be unable to attend with my current award and requesting that they reconsider my award. Yesterday she replied to my email and said all reconsiderations will be made on Wednesday (today). She also said I should receive a response by the end of week.

So I suggest that if you do plan to fax or e-mail them a letter, do it sooner than later. Also, you will improve your chances if you write them a very logical letter.

By the way, I am an international applicant.

Hey everyone, appealed the financial aid. We’ll see what happens. I’ve done some more thinking and I still have to decide what school I want to attend and which is going to be the best for me. Hopefully after the appeals process I won’t have to decide solely based on financial aid, aha.

Thanks for the help!
