So, my FASFA states that my EFC is little over 8000. Duke gave me 43000 and said my total contribution is a little over 12000. Should I even try to appeal?

What was the makeup of the package in terms of scholarships verses loans?

Hi everyone. Could someone please tell me the difference between FA grants and scholarships at Duke. Thanks!

assuming you turned in the CSS Profile and their calculations as an institution included that information.

always worth an appeal if you have anything else to share about your finances…that you think is worth consideration…

Well, they gave me about a 38000 grant, 2000 workstudy, and 1700 loan…and then they calculated into the package a 1200 outside scholarship I recieved

That sounds like a really good package. There is no downside to appealing. If you appeal and they can’t do anything more for you I hope you can still go there.

“Well, they gave me about a 38000 grant …”

Oh my, if only I had something close to that …

:(

If it’s not enough, you can always appeal after freshman year.
I got about 10k more in grants just by sending a letter to the finaid office explaining my family’s circumstances.

To the OP- I went to Blue Devil Days yesterday and was in the same situation as you. So when I went to the Financial Aid Office, they explained to me why it was different and other things that duke factored in that FAFSA/CSS profile didn’t (such as assets and home equity). So in the end, I’d say that don’t even bother wasting your time appealing.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but if we did not apply for financial aid, does that mean we don’t get any merit scholarships from Duke either?

cadillac: finalist weekend for merit scholarships was a couple weeks ago. Merit scholarships are granted independent of financial need.

And we would have been notified if we received any, right? Or do we have to check it on some website ourselves?
