Appealing for merit aid?

People aren’t being mean. They are being direct, and trying to offer you other ways to look at the situation that you find yourself in. Unfortunately, lots of kids can’t afford their first choice school. Mine couldn’t even afford to apply to his top school. We had to pick which 5 would generate the best outcomes after running the NPCs. What people are trying to explain is that you need to work with what you have. Also understand that you have excellent options. You are obviously a hard working student. You will be able to find success where ever you go.

Hi @lesjubilants. You’ve been admitted to some great schools. Congratulations!
Getting into UNC OOS is quite a feat in and of itself. My son also has very impressive stats and did not get any merit aid either. There’s nothing wrong with asking them to reconsider, but just know it will likely lead nowhere. Comparing your awards at other schools, albeit impressive, will not matter to them. The spot they offered you is yours for the taking, they do not need to lure you in further. If you decline admission they will simply offer a spot to a waitlisted student. That’s simply the reality of college admissions.
Weigh out your options and see what works best for you and your family. You’re clearly quite bright and will succeed at any university.
Good luck!

My son received full tuition scholarship from a top 15 school but nothing from a lower ranked school. Don’t take it personally. Also, don’t act like you’re owed anything despite being proud of deserving it. Just my $.02.

As a “meets need” (as they define it) school, UNC-CH FA is primely focused on need based aid rather than merit aid. For that reason, many well qualified students do not get merit aid. The money just isn’t there. If you feel that your need based aid overlook something such as large medical bills then be all means appeal.
