So, I applied to Davis for the School of Engineering (Biotech as my major), but I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. I just thought it was better to put something down than go undeclared. Well, apparently (and I was unaware of this), they admit by major, or at least by school, and I’m fairly certain it is because of this that I didn’t get in. I was wondering if you could appeal by just saying I’d switch to a different school, such as the School of L&S. They say you need “new and compelling information”, and there isn’t a lot that’s new, besides that. Would that be justification enough though?

By the way, here are my stats really quick:
UC GPA: 3.95
SAT I: 2060
SAT II: 740/660

DrAhumada, I absolutely agree with you; I believe that's how I got into Davis as an out-of-state resident; I declared my major as Clinical Nutrition (which isn't very popular compared to other majors). However, this may not be the case; admission officers believe to have picked, for lack of a better word, applicants based on a holistic view. I also believe that appealing would be encouraged, but most students who do choose to appeal would not really have the benefit of the doubt, so to speak. Appealing is a hard way to go, especially since Davis is considered a little prestigious.

UCD doesn't use holistic, some of the other UC's do, but it is a straight point system. And in the Engineering College, this is more often than not the reason for rejection.

The appeals process is only to appeal the decision made on your original application for the major you applied for. The appeals do not allow change of information on the application such as major choice.

yes you can switch in, but there are some pretty stringent reqs to switch into engineering. each college has a different set of reqs, but it's all online.

really norcallie, me and my roommate both got in on appeal :)

which to me is statistically amazing considering that there are approximately 200? or so appealees on campus out of 30,000? students.

i dont think it says anywhere that we were admitted on appeal either, the only thing ive gotten on a different day/time that was even remotely different than what all the other admits got was my acceptance about 6 weeks after the rejection (never got a rejection letter tho), stating that "we are pleased to grant your appeal"

I appealed to Davis and got in so there's definitely a chance, but I had a sufficient reason: financial hardship. I felt like I got rejected because of my major (biological sciences) too. I believe I had the number one major at Davis. Anyways, it's worth a try so you won't have any regrets later on.

Yes please only appeal if you would have really loved to come here. I personally find it ridiculous and annoying when people appeal to every UC simply because they got rejected.

Yeah the major thing is tough. Aero Engineering only has like 200 spots in the whole program or something. I get to orientation and there's like 15 people in it lol. Multiply that by 2 sessions and you get like 30 freshman aero engineers. Excellent odds...

I wouldn't mention the major problem on your appeal.

it's completely up to you, there is no min or max
personally, i gave them all of my recs (like 5, i was originally going to pick and choose the top 2/3) bc i just wanted to go in guns blazing.

but 2 or 3 sounds awesome hehe :)

really it's a personal thing
it's your final stand to say that you really love ucd, so do whatever you feel is necessary to prove that you belong here or else you'll later wonder if that would have gotten you in

Biotechnology is not in the College of Engineering. It's in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. However, I think it is a very selective major as there are only 50-80 spots available in the program every year.
