Hello!
I was accepted into NYU. However, i was only given a $1,000 scholarship. Unfortunately my family does not apply for need based aid according to FAFSA. I was also admitted into UCSD for their biology program. I’d much rather prefer to attend NYU however my parents cannot finance $70,000 a year versus $30,000 for UCSD. It just doesn’t make sense to them. Is there any way i can appeal the financial decision and explain to NYU that if they Gave me a little bit more money (at least enough to make it somewhat comparable to UCSD like 40-50,000) that i would definitely attend??
Also, i have a close friend who got about $60k from NYU this year both through need based aid and fafsa. I have much higher stats than her, however she applied and got in ED so they obviously saw her commitment. Do you think they can give me some money considering my stats are pretty high?
I am sorry i think i phrased it wrong. I am definitely not hoping for 40-50,000 in aid im hoping for my tuition to be 40-50000 so that it is somewhat comparable to UCSD. That would be about $20,000 in aid.
I am not eligible for financial aid according to FAFSA although i did fill it out. For FAFSA you generally do not get any money from them if your family income is more than $150k. However just because your family income is more than $150k doesn’t mean you can automatically afford $70-80k for school. I do hope that i can write in an appeal to NYU that my family can not afford a tuition that expensive, but if it were to be lowered a little then i would definitely be able to attend.
I doubt it will make a difference. They concentrate FA at the lower income levels.
You did the FAFSA, did you submit your profile or CSS to NYU? They will need that to even consider you for FA. If you did not, then that is the problem.
If you sent it, and there were no mistakes or material changes since then, there is very little to appeal. They know how much they cost, and have little incentive to give you more FA with hundreds of kids that don’t need to on the WL
You are in at UCSD! Congrats! There is nothing so special at NYU to make this even a hard choice in my opinion!
NYU has a tiered system for financial aid, and with that $1000 award you are in the “insult” tier (vs. the “kick-to-the-curb” tier who get nothing).
Bottom line, they don’t care if you come or not. If they did, they would have offered you more in the first place. They could see from your application that you are a California resident – so they knew when they accepted you that they were competing against UC pricing.
When my daughter applied to NYU a decade ago, she was offered about $8000. She “appealed” and they increased the offer to about $9000. Some students who had similar offers appealed and got +$2000 rather than the +$1000 my D. got. No one got more. That’s just the way it works.
So yes, appeal. Because you have absolutely nothing to lose, and NYU is well-equipped to handle an appeal. You’ll probably get an answer back in a couple of days.
But you aren’t going to get the money you are looking for. Maybe they will make that $1000 award into a $2000 award. If you try you will at least get back some info that you can share with others online.
But they aren’t going to turn it into anything that would come near to what you would pay at UCSD … and on top of that, for bio UCSD is probably the better school for your major. Or at least I don’t see how you could possibly convince your parents otherwise.
NYU tuition can be expected to continue to rise over the next 4 years and there are all sorts of additional cost beyond COA — travel, higher costs associated with life in Manhattan, etc.— so I think you really should just buy your UCSD T-shirt and plan to attend college there.
And count your blessings --there are so many people this year moaning and groaning about getting denied from top UC campuses that you are very fortunate indeed to have that spot.
My personal assessment is that UCSD’s program is better anyways, but I’m biased: I had a friend go there, with wild success, for bio/chem or bioengineering or something. Loved it. Raves about it – that’s how I know this.
FAFSA is a financial aid application form. It doesn’t give you a nickel of money…but the information on it is used to determine you eligibility for federally funded need based aid.
With a $150,000 income…you wouldn’t be eligible for a nickel of federally funded aid.
NYU also uses the CSS Profile, and THAT is what they use to award their institutional need based aid. Did you complete that? Even with that…NYU does NOT guarantee to meet financial need…and they do preferential packaging for merit aid. As @calmom noted…you were not on their A list or you would have gotten more aid to begin with.
Even if you appeal, it’s NOT likely you will see $20,000 in additional aid.
Yes UCSD is in state for me sorry for the miscommunication. However, I am not too thrilled about going there. If I were able to pay 50,000 or less at NYU, my parents may consider it. I do know many people who are emailing colleges and telling them about their financial situations to gain sympathy. Maybe it is worth a shot as I have nothing to lose at this point
