Hey guys, I got rejected from UC Berkeley but really want to appeal. Do you think I have a shot? I applied as an art major, but since my application I've applied everywhere else as an English major and want to appeal as one.

Some stats:
GPA - 4.12, my grades were all a's this year
SAT - 1980; critical reading: 730, math: 580, writing: 670
SAT IIs - chemistry: 600, literature: 720, u.s. history: 640
AP tests - chemistry: 3, u.s. history: 4, ap english language: 5

Extracurriculars:
did drama for 9th/10th years (wrote plays as well as performed)
was the editor of my school's creative writing magazine in 10th grade
was the editor of the school newspaper in 11th grade
took a bunch of photography classes outside school this year, and am sending a portfolio for the ap studio art exam even though my school doesn't offer the course

Accomplishments since applying:
intern for local newspaper
had poetry published in a really selective (2%) student poetry magazine

I'm also planning to attach a rec letter from my english teacher (it's a pretty amazing letter).

should I mention in my letter other schools I've been accepted to? (UCLA, NYU, Sarah Lawrence, UCSB with honors among others)

No point in appealing under a different major, especially in L&S where they don’t even look at it. Grades aren’t stellar, SAT isn’t too good, SAT II’s pretty bad, AP scores aren’t too good, ECs not particularly impressive. You shouldn’t mention other schools and since they aren’t really more selective or better than Berk, so what’s the point?
I don’t think your new accomplishments are very significant either, but the letter of rec might help if you were borderline to begin with I guess, although I don’t see it.

don’t listen to strikemaster, just appeal, nothing bad could happen. and if you’re truly interested in English and writing then indicate that and talk about your internship and poetry.

Yeah, definitely appeal because you do actually have new information and it’s true you have nothing to lose. Just saying it isn’t too good of a chance because there’s a waitlist this year and it’ll be harder to get in on appeal.

Definitely appeal! With the new info and rec letter, I would also include an essay about why you want to attend CAL or why its your first choice.
