UCs do not keep a waitlist. Instead, a lot of them reserve a spot for appeals.

"UCs do not keep a waitlist."

Ok, sorry, not exactly a "waitlist" but a late acceptance list of people, who they basically accept to fall quarter if enough spots clear.

"Instead, a lot of them reserve a spot for appeals."

Dude, I don't know where you get your info from, but if they actually reserved spots for appeals, it wouldn't be so hard to actually GET an appeal accepted. UCs have an appeals process, for people who may have had a disadvantage hindering then during their studies, not for people to just try and get in again.

sigh...I got the info from the link that YOU JUST POSTED. If you look, it says Berkeley keeps a reserve spot. Jesus christ.

It is QUESTION 10 on the last page, where it says,
"Is the space set aside for appeals?"

For Berkeley, it says YES.

i think the consensus is that if the basis of your appeal is first semester grades then you have no argument

okok my bad honestly. I didn't read until the end. I assumed that they didn't because they only accepted less than 3% of the appeals they got, therefore it didn't exactly seem like they reserved a spot specifically for appeals.

Can Fall applicants be accepted to Spring terms from their appeals?

Hey....do u have a social security number?

do u have a social security number

Yeah, I'm in a similar situation. I got rejected from Berkeley, my top choice, so I am appealing. Here's my stats:

4.44 W GPA
3.85 UW GPA
4.15 UC GPA
SAT I: 2040 Total, 700 Math, 700 Verbal, 640 Writing
SAT II: 700 Math II, 640 Physics
AP Tests: 5 AP Calculus, 3 AP Physics, Will be taking Comp Sci, Stat, Lit/Comp
188 Hours CS

I think I didn't get in b/c I did not have enough EC activities. This year, I joined a whole bunch of clubs and did a lot of CS, but these were not in my original application. Wolud this be considered "New and Significant" information and will this put me over the top? BTW, I applied for Electrical Engineering as my major.

I'm in the same boat as you, and I'm appealing.

3.87 UW GPA
4.1 W GPA
SAT I: 2140; 730 CR, 750 Writing, 660 Math
SAT II: I think I got nailed here, I only got 650 for Lit and 550 for Math 2C. I applied as an English Major too =(
3 on AP English Language, 4 in World History AP, will be taking AP Lit, Calc AB/AP, and French Language AP
I have about 80 hours of CS, and some officer positions in clubs. I'm part of a teen staff for my local newspaper, news editor for school newspaper, and I won a third place trophy for writing at a journalism workshop at Stanford
some other minor accomplishments, played sports, and i have work experience

My grounds of appeal are:
-grandmother's death 2 weeks before end of application season
-accidently listed myself as being born in california when i immigrated here, big blunder on my part

I'm crossing my fingers, hope you get in too.

why do you want to know if i have a social security number?

I've heard that CoC isn't any more competitive than L&S, but it sure doesn't seem that way. I got into CoC and I've never taken Chem at school, or the SATII Chem. I have, however, taken tons of math classes--8 to be exact (required for hs grad-3).

I'm not sure about appealing, but is it worth asking the university why I didn't get in? Is there someone I can email?

I got into Berkeley on appeal. It was like the happiest day of my life. REJECTING ME WAS A MISTAKE, I TELL YOU! ROAR!!! >:o

Let me tell you about my high school career and appeal letter. =]... for future reference. Okay... I don't remember what my scores and stuff are... but here is how I remember em to the best of my ability.

GPA: 4.0 (unweighted, I don't know what that is weighted lol)
SATI: 2040 (took it once, it was good enough for me =])
SATII: Literature: like... 640? kinda weak but decent, MathII: 700, I got a 580 my first time... but that was kind of sad so I retook it again and it was worth it. I only took two SATII tests.
AP: English 3 Honors (Score: 3), Calc AB AP (5), English Comp.Lit. (4), AP Stats (4)
Extra curricular: 3 years tennis, 4 years in 2 community service clubs (160+ hours), 2 years newspaper, 4 years choir, 8 years private piano lessons (LOOK AT HOW WELL ROUNDED I AM! psh... =X)
Leadership positions: Captain of tennis team senior year, Editor of Columnists for newspaper junior year, VP for newspaper senior year, Manager for boys' tennis team senior year
Work: 1 summer of the Work Experience Program
Awards: Uhh... Outstanding Women of IHS, Scholar Athlete, Principal's Honor, Interactor of the Month, Inspirational Award, and stuff

I think that's it.
So this is what I did: My letter was kind of generic... but I got in, which is something that I'd like to call one of God's many miracles.
All I did was... basically tell them I'm well rounded and a hard worker... and I mentioned everything I just told you. Haha. I sent one letter of support from my English teacher and... I sent a list of my accomplishments (i.e. awards, extra curricular activities)
I don't know how else to help... but that's what I did. AND HEY! I'M HERE! I'm telling you... it's a miracle! =]

Oh yea... I'm a first year... it's almost been one year since I've received my acceptance. =]

atticusf: how was your courseload? The gap between your UW and W GPAs is sorta small -- with an UW GPA that high, you should have a higher W GPA. It might've been the major you put down (English, I think, is one of Berkeley's well-known majors), and your SAT II scores obviously didn't help.

i was wondering, do we need to post our transcripts as well? or will a letter and teacher recs be enough? cos when applying, they specifically said not to send transcripts, that Berkeley will ask for them...

i would only send it if your grades are significantly better than the grades you sent in with your original application. otherwise, the letter and the teacher recs should be sufficient without the transcript.

It's mainly due to your SAT II scores?
710 Math 610 USH? CMON...

I'm not sure if I misinterpreted info, but did want Berkeley want this appeal letter handwritten?

no, i dont think it has to be handwritten, but we have to post it off, no emails, faxes, or telephone appeals.
where did you get ur info from?
