well decisions for the fall 2013 semester came out today and i was denied admission to both UCSB and Cal Poly SLO. i am kinda surprised by this, because i thought my credentials were pretty decent.

my 10-12 gpa is a 3.73, granted this is the updated gpa after 1st semester senior year grades were final. i had quite a bit of AP's and i was enrolled in higher math, AP Calc AB during my junior year, and AP Calc BC currently. i played swimming and water polo for 3 years, and had volunteer hours as well as an internship.

despite all that i still got rejected. i applied as an engineering major, econ alternate. my grades in the higher math classes, (11th and 12th) were decent, only A's and B's. i want to appeal the decisions, but i could definitely use some input/advice from fellow applicants and current students of these colleges on what to expect and what to include in my appeal.

thanks!

I don’t think those colleges will accept you just because you showed interest and you really want to go there by appealing…Is your SAT score over 1800 ? If its not don’t bother appealing…

my sat score was 1980 superscored, and my best in one test was 1900.
my composite act score was 30.

Last year my friend was denied from UCSB and he appealed the decision. Ultimately he got in, but he did note that he was one of less than 10 appealees that did. He also had extremely compelling reasons (more so than anyone should ever go through), as to why his grades dipped, and why he didn’t initially report the extenuating circumstances on his original application.

I’m not sure if he was accurate with the number of successful UCSB appeals, but if he was, note that you probably have a very low chance of getting your rejection reversed.

don’t understand why you weren’t accepted to both with a 1900…Is your class rank too low ? Do you have good ec’s ? Whats your unweighted cumulative GPA ?

my 10-12 class rank is 87 i think, as of my current transcript.

i do have good ec’s like an internship at a semiconductor firm and they even gave me a letter of rec that i am planning to include in my appeal letter.

unweighted culmulative gpa i dont know off the top of my head, but i thought they take 10-12 academic gpa?

@whenhen could you tell me some topics your friend mentioned or how long his appeal letter ended up being?

One thing that was suggested to me, for those of you waiting from Berkeley and UCLA, wait until those decisions come out. You never know. You might get positive news from them and will decide that you would much rather go there than UCSB. You never know the Admissions people what they are looking for.
