Appealing to UCSD

I managed to accumulate only 7660/7738 points. That's a 78 point difference. I was wondering if appeal is still possible if I managed to vastly increase my GPA with a 4.83 1st semester of senior year?

My stats at the time of application:
No ELC (GRRRAAHAHHHH Top 4.2% of class -- Now I'm top 3% of class >_< )
4.17 UC GPA Weighted
200+ hours of community service (but did not receive maximum points--300)
29 ACT/1940 SAT + 760 US History and 700 Math II
40+ a-g requirement classes.

I also have a new story about the sickness of one of my family members that happened after the application.

Does my appeal look like a good effort to get in?

not really ... my brother was ELC and had similar stats, but still didn't get in.

does it work if you have family sickness after you sent it your app? cause I really don't think it effected your schoolwork or anything, since they don't take senior year into consideration.

^^^^^great name, awkward moose!

Astrina, how many points did your brother have? Had I had ELC, I would have had ~7960 points.

i wouldn't know ... i'm not a helicopter parent -- or sibling, for that matter. :)

Whyd didnt u receive max communitty service points if u had 200 hours

those are good stats im baffled to as why you didn't get in the first place

May be because the community service was over three or four years.

how do you find out how many points you got??????????

call and ask

^kinda scared to. How do I start the conversation out?

Don't be scared. They won't bite. Just say something like... "excuse me but I have a question regarding UCSD's admissions point system for this year. You see..." You wouldn't be the first one so it's something they'll happily comply with.

Good luck!

@ Calling Card

Well, I called them and they just said I didn't receive max points for it. I had about 72 hours in 10th grade, 170 hours for 11th grade, and 108 hours for 12th grade, so for any two year period, I had 200+ hours. They said my points was between 150 and 300 but they wouldn't tell me exactly what, which ticked me off.

Remember, UCSD accepts about 90% of all ELC students. I was accepted partly because of that or so I thought, shrugs.

My stats are way worse than yours, as I stated in previous posts in the "rejected" thread.

I was shocked that I was accepted as well. I didn't think I was going to get accepted, but I was.

When i estimated my points for UC apps, it was around 7090, about 700 points off from the UCSD requirements.

They must have been looking for more ERCs. I had a lot, but i don't think it justified me as being accepted.

I would have been fine to give up my place for better qualified students, not saying im not smart, but it seems unfair for me to be accepted while others were rejected with better scores and ERCs as well.

Did you call them and asked what was you total accumulated points? You should appeal anyways, UCSD doesn't have that strict of an appeal like LA

astrina: love your allusion to "helicopter parent -- or sibling".

haha i know .. some are pretty crazy, professors have told me about parents calling them and trying to get info on their kids' grades, trying to force good study habits on them, etc.

my parents are pretty much like latchkey parents; they still don't know that my brother got rejected from UCSD yet :/

I think you should call and ask whether they'll allow you to appeal, but I don't think they will.

You can appeal, but most likely than not, they will not change their decision. Unless something extraordinary happens.

But keep this in mind, they base their admission for everyone on the same time period. I don't think they consider anything that has happened to you after jr year because that would mean someone else has more time to prove himself/get more comm. service hours, etc. than another person.

When I called them to appeal, I asked if I was qualified to appeal, and they simply stated, "Oh, did you even READ the online FAQ?"
I said, "Yeah, it says I have to call to confirm an appeal. Can I appeal?"
They reply, "You can try, but I don't know if you could do it successfully."
Confused, I said, "So what should I do to appeal?"
Angrily, they responded, "You didn't even read the FAQ, huh?"

I was so ticked because the FAQ specifically says that I have to call and see if I'm allowed to appeal, and when I ask, they accuse me of not reading the FAQ. -___-

Basically, you can appeal without their confirmation.
