APPEALING Via MARCHING BAND

I just contacted the UCLA band director about band appeals

I think I'm gonna do it!

I think if you're that interested in joining the band you should have done it before admissions, not after. Now it looks like you're just using the program to get in.

I'm going to do it too...:)....Yeah it might look like it(that we're using the program) but if we were to do it before admissions and let's say actually be admitted into the band, but not the school, then we would still be in this predicament--trying to be admitted to the school. If it enhances our chances for them to reconsider us, then it's a try.....

What instrument are y'all auditioning for?
I'm going to appeal via Gordon too...:p

@Locke-- well actually, before getting rejected, I had planned on joining the band so...if I get in on this appeal...it's a double win for me. hehe.. I hope.

Are you guys going to add an additional appeal letter with the band form? I'm thinking of doing it, but I don't know who I should have write my 2 recommendation letters...Band director, guidance counselor, or a teacher that really likes me?

I'm doing clarinet
playing Major C, Bb, and E

then doing a solo on the fighting song of my school
writing an additional letter too

One rec

some minor scales wouldn't hurt, considering it is a college band, haha.

lol everyone tries to do this. admissions is wise to it ^_^

^Really? Gordon said there is <50% chance of getting admitted, but from what I've heard from other students, most people still get in. Any comments?

he said if you don't have a high GPA (above 3.8) u have lower chances, also he itnended to say "get your stuff early because if u dont, ur chances deminish!"

Dude, this marching band appeal is so bad for me because it's making me get my hopes up again. I'm going to be so crushed if I get rejected from LA a second time. x_x

...because the ones who don't get in aren't there to tell you ;)

^ Ahahhaa, okay, point taken -_-

I play flute, so according to the UCLA marching band website, I should do 3 of the 4 listed major scales: Bb, Eb, C or F & an etude or short prepared piece.

havhaikumarukuchan: do you think it is wise to play your school's fight song(a "short prepared piece") or an etude? I'm not sure if I myself should do my school's fight song or some etude, or "short prepared piece" that are listed on the requirements......What would he be impressed with?

Yeah after he sent that email I asked him more questions and one of those questions were : out of the people who submitted their appeals through band, how many actually were admitted to the school? He told me that about 10 out of 50 got in........bruinj.....hopefully what those students said are true.......yeah and this is getting my hopes up too :( :/ :) :( .....hopefully they can accept everyone who appeals through band, because we'll all be great additions to the band, and they need more flutes(last year they had like less than 20 people in the flute section...40+ in the trumpet section)......please accept us!!!:)

O and I'll try to get my band director who studied and received certificates and scholarships from UCLA and USC, but I think he likes UCLA more...hehe....so hopefully that'll work.

^

I play clarinet, I bet they have tons of that... lol. I decided to play the schools' fight song because I can show off my ability to play marching music

I checked their band website picture section: Section Photos 2008 , and they only 12 flutes and 13 clarinets :O....I know they want quality musicians but what if you can barely hear them over those screaming trumpets???

Oooh Lecram, don't mean to pry or anything, but were there any other questions you asked Gordon that might be of use to us? Hehe :] For one, I don't want to bug him with the same questions over and over.
Gah, I have heard that Gordon prefers brass over woodwinds? Unlucky for woodwinds...haha. Are you guys submitting an additional letter that you want to be considered with the band appeal? Because I have a few things to say un-band related, and a letter of rec from an academic teacher, and Idont' want Gordon to be like...>:[

His answers were very simple and brief and I think I sort of annoyed him with 8 emails....haha.....but I needed answers...I wanted more out of him, but I know he's a busy man...He just reiterated what he said in the email he sent us(>3.8, < 50% chance, etc.) and questions related to what department and major I should appeal under since I was denied by the SoNursing :( which is more selective, so I should have chosen a less impacted major to begin with(damnit)...

O i also asked him if we can turn in an additional letter but he said "it will only confuse things" and then he explained the acceptance rates appealing through band and w/ out the band. Maybe if we already chose to appeal through band, we shouldn't appeal through other means, only band???I dont know....so are we limited to just band for appealing opportunities??

But yeah I'm submitting an additional letter that is unrelated to band too just in case...it's very NEW and COMPELLING...and it shouldn't confuse things....with the band appeal I think I have chance along with the rec from my band director....

Thank you so much! :]
Ehh... do you think maybe it would be better if we sent the additional, regular appeal letter separately then? Like we mail it to admissions, and say, along with this I have a band appeal blahblah? Or it's still better to add it in the band e-mail we give to Gordon...cuz in his own email he even said we could add a letter, but he told you not to....-_-
Do people have better chances with Gordon himself when they have h.s. band directors that are close with him, and call him up to recommend students or something? It seems like it...

So do we mail or email him that form he sent as an attachment to us??? Yes he said we can attach a letter but with primarily band related stuff and you said you wanted to submit a letter of "un-band related"....

I'm not sure but it's worth a try if you know anyone who possibly might know him or was part of the UCLA music department to recommend you...

bruinj, btw what instrument do you play?
