Appealing??

I was really shocked and depressed after hearing from both Cal and LA that I got rejected. I thought i was match to both of them.....
I dont know if I should appeal to them because I really want to go to Cal.
Some of my friends with lower stats got into Cal, but I dont understand why I didnt. I had significantly lower grades (5B's and 2A's) compared to my other semester graders because my mom got cancer during that period.
I put that down under my personal essay, but I dont know if I should put that down in appeal letter...
Also during junior summer vacation, I took community college course but didnt put it in application. Should I include in my appeal?
Also should I send any records for my mom's sickness since they may not believe from my personal essay?
Also for awards, I didnt put that I was in principal's honor list(ppl with over certain gpa gets it) and CSF, so should I also put it down in appeal?
I also saw a post that i can email students in Cal for help, but I dont know if it really helps...

Can anyone give me feedbacks on appealing process?

certainly try the appeal, it can only help. Explain why you had the lower grades/test scores you did, but remember, they don't consider things during senior year, so saying something like "I got straight A's in my second semester of senior year" won't help, they don't look at those things.

Try and sound unique and personal, but don't come across as trying to get the "pity vote". I personally believe the essays are a very important aspect of the application (others don't), maybe your friends had very stunning stories to tell and that gave them the edge.

Good luck!

Do admission office not consider things i put down on appeal that I also put down in my personal essay?

go for it. My friend's in the same situation, except he was told cal was a safe match for him -_-

i'm just curious... how many students get into berkeley by appealing?
because i haven't heard successful stories...

i know one person who got in through appeals, and that's it. From what I hear, your chances of getting in via appeals are low, but you should definitely try if you think something has been overlooked. Remember, don't talk about things your senior year, because from what i've heard they don't even consider it. talk about something that addresses why you think you should be addmitted that wasn't in your application essay.

when you appeal, do you usually get accepted to the fall semester or spring? i was admitted to spring and am looking into appealing for fall...

I don't think you can appeal if you are admitted to the spring. And if you are, you would certainly wouldn't be given priority, you would be considered after other appeals from students who didn't get in at all.

Frankly, if you got in to the spring, don't appeal. your chances of getting into the fall is near (if not completely) 0. Just do fall extension or go to Community college, its cheaper.

My advice is don't try it. You've already been admitted as a Cal student! Look into Fall Extension if you wish.

to the OP: put everything you mentioned (mom's illness, community college class, etc. ) in your appeal. Write about your senior year, your plans for the future, whatever... you have NOTHING to lose. Get your principal or others to write rec letter(s) and include them. I know one kid who appealed last year and got in and one who appealed and did not get in. Chances are slim if you appeal, but zero if you don't. Good luck.

What I really want to ask is even though I PUT down my mom's illness on my personal statement, would it still help if I put it down in my appeal with medical documents?

sure. more evidence couldn't hurt.
