i have just visited the optician in my college town and was told to wear glasses full time. Since i also have a pretty bad smile (open bite) due to an accident, I was wondering whether I should get braces as well. I am a sophomore at a 'good' school and am pretty but am admittedly overweight. So would you guys have the guts to wear glasses and braces in college or should I wait. A guy friend of mine who pretty much fits the above description is in a similar quandary so this will probably help him as well.

Why not try invisible braces or something like that? I personally would feel weird having braces in college.

Err…it’s college. I will be honest and say no one cares about what you look like. If you are smart and have a good personality and attitude, people will like you. Invisible braces only work on teeth with minor damage and are more expensive I think. You would look like a nerd but who cares…nerds are awesome! Just be you and take care of yourself.

I have a friend who wears braces. He has plenty of friends and is very well liked. He even gets lead roles in plays and runs a few clubs. That’s not going to deter people.

Get them done now and get it out of the way.

You don’t sound that confident in yourself. That’s going to be a far bigger obstacle in your social life than braces, glasses, or your weight.

I would do the braces now as well. Get them out of the way while appearance still doesn’t matter (because in college, it really doesn’t). And if you’re that worried about your weight, you could start to hit the gym. Really, none of them is a big deal.

I mean, I won’t lie, appearance is pretty important at least where I go to college. But I have met several people with braces, and I don’t think people look at them funny.

Better to get them now than have them on at your first job interview after graduation.

PS Glasses are hot!

Have you tried looking as contacts as an option if you’re that worried?

I also don’t think that it’s that big of a deal. You should straighten out your teeth now so you can look even better in a few years when you’re OUT of college - when things start really mattering.

I got braces less than a year ago and am going to college this fall, so with a timeline of two years, I’ll have braces for my entire first year of college.

My teeth straightened up in about a month when I got braces (which is why I don’t understand why I’m still wearing them, but that’s another story), but ever since I got them, I’ve not been afraid to smile (whereas when my teeth were unaligned without them, I never smiled open-mouthed), and am always laughing and smiling and not caring.

People see through the superficial things such as braces and eyeglasses when you don’t worry about them, when you don’t let them define you, and you let your inner-light shine (that sounds so tacky and cliche, but it really is true!)… just keep your confidence and it’ll overrule any small, superficial factor.
