Odd ~ random question here.....family is purchasing a new Apple computer for freshman daughter. I am strongly considering purchasing this Apple product from Best Buy rather than an Apple store since the closest Apple store is in Greensboro. With Best Buy being just a short hop and a skip down the road from the University, it seems like using the Geek Squad seems like a logical choice. So my question is ....does anyone have any words of wisdom for Elon students finding Apple Support? My daughter will not have a car...so this seems to make sense. Any and all help is sincerely appreciated.

If you buy the laptop through the Elon program, you can get tech support at Elon.

have you looked st this:

Starting Fall 2013, Elon University has partnered with Best Buy’s Geek Squad and The Computer Dept., both located off University Drive, to provide students with computer support and repair. Both locations offer configuration, repair, and troubleshooting assistance for a variety of devices. Elon University’s Technology Help Desk, located at 114 W. Lebanon Avenue, still assists students with limited software support, wireless configurations, and problems with print management stations. Our services have not changed in regard to faculty and staff. For more information, contact Best Buy’s Geek Squad or The Computer Dept. using the contact information listed:

Best Buy - 1465 University Drive / 336-584-0297
The Computer Dept. - 1409 University Drive #2 / 336-756-7654

You can also buy your computer through Apple for a student discount. I think its $200 off list price computers and $30 off laptops. (<a href=“Education Pricing and Student Discounts - Education - Apple”>http://store.apple.com/us_edu_23998/browse/campaigns/education_pricing)

This may be a dumb question, but if you purchase a MacBook through Elon, does it get shipped to home first or do you have to pick it up once you get to campus? If we purchase the MacBook at home at an Apple Store, would my daughter just download a complimentary Microsoft Office from an Elon link? Also, for those of you with current students at Elon, do you recommend my daughter bringing down a printer, and if so, is it something that’s easily shared with a roommate or better for each to have? Any other “technology” advice?

My daughter has been away and as soon as she gets back this weekend, I want her to start shopping for her dorm and clothes (she’s worn a uniform for 13 years, so I think she’s most excited about new clothes, but I want her to get “the essentials” first!)

We bought a Dell through the Elon program 2 years ago and had it shipped to our home. Son was able to download software from Elon with some phone support from the Elon tech department to get laptop set up. You don’t need a printer. They print as needed in library and other locations - but I think much of what they do is submitted online so there is less printing than you think.
