Apple laptops

Mac's so much better than Acers, I can guarentee you that.

those are GREAT! icierair, especially when I'm writing my French papers. yeah, that's a sweet feature.

niether windows nor osx are particularly good. i use windows just because i know how to, but im currently installing ubuntu (linux) as well so i can dual boot. of course windows vista is coming out soon, which should hopefully be a major improvement over xp.

One feature I like of the mac is that you can just shut it (the screen, literally) and your computer wull automatically go to sleep. That is not the case for the Dells my parents have and the HP my mom has.

Err, you know that those HPs and Dells could be configured to sleep when shutting the screen, right?

For a PC gamer, though, the answer to the "apple v. PC" argument is pretty obvious.

but what's "sleep" mean? When I was using an HP laptop, it could only sleep for a few hours - otherwise it had to save everything to disk. With macs, they can literally sleep for days, maybe even weeks.

A Thinkpad or an Apple.

If you pick one of the above, you can't go wrong.

and btw, my thinkpad sleeps for one day and uses up 4% of total power.

Just an FYI, new mac mouses do have right-click...and you can right-click on all macs with ctrl-click.

And you can plug in any mouse if you need the right click. I'm actually using a Microsoft one right now.

For Word, you can:

hold ctrl and '
then press a, e, i, o, u, etc. for an accented letter.

or

hold ctrl + ~ (aka shift + `)
and then press n for a tilde-ed n.

:)

I need to get a laptop before college, but I don't think I can possibly afford one over $1500 at the most. Are all of these good ones pricier, or is there a reliable cheaper one? The last thing I need is one that crashes constantly..

Do some research: The best already built Macbook is 1499$, and that is excluding the educational discount.

Ray192... how do you do that? That would be nice to know. The mac does it automatically, but it would be really nice to figure out how to do it on a PC. The Dell I have like freaks out when I do and the screen goes blue and I got to restart it

I agree with you on the gaming aspect. If that's what you're using your computer for, then get a PC.

The (well the one my mom has) HP laptop heats up really quickly, but then again I think they are one of the only computer companies that havn't recalled their batteries. Mac and Dell and I believe Sony have recalled their batteries

The batteries Sony recalled were only for a few old Mac and Dell models.
Most notebooks heat up quickly esp. if they're connected to the mains but on battery, most power down.

That is simply not the case anymore: buy a Macbook Pro or a Mac Pro, install Boot Camp, and run any Windows game you want.

If by "only" you mean more than hundreds of thousands of laptops, then I would question your use of the term. The battery recall applies to nearly all aluminum Powerbooks, if I am not mistaken. Those Powerbooks do not in anyway constitute a minute portion of the Apple-notebook-using population.

About the batteries---I believe the first poster was saying that only a few MODELS of the computer were recalled due to faulty batteries. You know, MacBook as one model, iBook as another, etc (i dont know if these are the models recalled--well, i know macbook wasnt b/c i still have mine).

Yes, it did affect thousands of computers but was limited to a few models.

Whoops, my mistake.

Woohoo, I think I just caused a blue screen of death on Windows Vista!

The thing I like about my Mac is that its ALMOST problem free. My ibook never froze and I never had to restart it. I had a broadband connection I plugged into my mac and got online with no probz. Plugged it into a pc and I had to go through a tutorial, plug things out and back in, restart and finally it started to work.

The thing I regret though is not doing my research because most Ibooks are plagued with logic board problems. After the 1 yr warranty was up the video card went on the fritz and I was told it would be $300 to fix.

I do plan on getting a new mac though but this time with extended warranty. You can get a refurbished macbook starting $899 and they are in the refurbished section to make room for the intel core 2 duo so some are brand new and they have the new parts so they probably do not suffer from the same problems.

Sorry, Mac lacks the power to do gaming. I can buy more for the punch at a Dell or an HP than I can at Apple.
