For anyone who might be interested, Apple is offering a nice deal for college students, staff and faculty now through September 8. When you purchase a MacBook (any kind) or iMac, you get a free iPod Touch, which sells for $229. And though they don't really publicize this, the fact is they'll apply the $229 to ANY iPod, so if you'd rather have the Classic or another model, you just have to pay the nominal difference.

Not only that, but customer service at Apple was SO nice, that even though we bought my son his new MacBook a couple of weeks ago, just before the promotion started, they extended the rebate to him, as well. He was very lucky...he netted a free printer AND a brand new iPod. You can purchase directly from Apple or through your school's computer store. We went through the Northwestern store and got an additional $100 student discount.

Anyway, if you've got a student and are looking to make a laptop purchase, it's probably worth checking this out.

The Apple store will also give you a student discount if you purchase at the regular Apple store as well. Just show them a student ID or log into your student account, or any way to prove you are in college/going to college. The student discount also applies to the extended Apple Care warranty which I recommend to everyone, it has been a lifesaver for me! Don’t spend the $149 on Microsoft Office in the Apple store. Most universities sell single copies of it in the bookstore for about $20!

Another reminder - the Apple Care program does not cover dropped computers, spills, ets. Everyone should check with the insurance company carrying homeowner’s insurance about a personal articles rider to cover the computer or get a separate policy to cover the student’s belongings. These policies are not expensive and give great peace of mind.

Last year at my D’s school, she could either get the free Ipod or an equivalent discount on the purchase. She didnt want the Ipod so we took the discount. For those with kids who already have an Ipod, inquire about that.

Just an fyi, i had bought a macbook about a week before the updated macbook pros came out, and I went to the applestore and they allowed me to trade it in for the new cheaper updated macbook pro, and gave me a refund! Just to let everyone know if they purchased a computer before that deal came out!
