Does it matter which operating system you have for a laptop? Does UF suggest one or the other? Do class requirements lean toward one?

Laptops aren’t required, so it shouldn’t matter.

From UF’s website:

Some colleges have specific requirements more restrictive than the general campus recommendation.

Windows laptop, notebook, or portable required:
■Accounting
■Architecture
■Building Construction
■Business Administration
■Engineering
■Pharmacy
Macintosh:
■Fine Arts - vary by department; some require specific Macintosh hardware and software

For most majors, you can use whatever you want, except for what Gator88NE mentioned. I’m a pre-med biology major, and I have a MacBook Pro (which I highly recommend to anyone). I disagree with michelleretsky. UF does have computers in their libraries which are free to use, but it’s often difficult to get a spot at one during the day, since so many people use them for work and printing. It’s nice to have your own laptop, which you can use at anytime, almost anywhere on campus, and print from it as well at the library. Also, if you don’t have a TV, it’s going to be your only source of digital entertainment. With all that said, I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t buy a laptop for college. I don’t know a single UF student who doesn’t have one.

I have a mac as well. Since its required to have windows for my major, I think I gotta install a windows os

Thanks everyone for your help. My S will be going as a pre-med student, so I think we’ll stick with Microsoft. Thanks again.

You could always get software like parallels to have Windows on a Mac
