I'm planning to get a Macbook Pro, and with the Cornell discount, the applecare protection plan comes to $240. Is it worth it?

YES....save yourself a headache and get applecare. You don't have to get it right away...you have a year, but save yourself the risk of forgetting and get it. you just never know what could go wrong and most of the time things go wrong at the worst time (like after your 1 year warranty period).....trust me, its better to have peace of mind knowing you can call apple whenever you want and send in your machine whenever it has a hardware problem. Not saying that you WILL have a hardware probem but it DOES hapen adn if you are not covered, you are stuck with a $2k+ piece of junk or will have to pay out of pocket for repairs, which you do NOT want to do.

anyway, have fun with your mbp....I will get one for gradschool next year.

Would it be better to get insurance instead? Insurance covers a lot more including theft.

I really like the AppleCare plan, they're extremely quick when it comes to repairing, I called them, the next day they sent the box for it and picked it up within the same day and I think I had my laptop back in 48 hrs.

Applecare is something you won't think was worth it until you need it. Like if your computer is hurt and you had your 20 page paper due in 3 hours saved on it.

i dunno if insurence will cover hardware or operating system failures to the extend that Apple will (or with the same speedy service and convenience for tha tmatter) but the fact that it covers things that Apple does NTO cover such as theft and perhaps other damages not coased by hardware or software, it may be worth it to get both Applecare and insurence.

After we spent LOTS of money on the Powerbook G4 for both S & D,
I felt the additional Applecare & insurance were well worth it. The problem is that even if the computers are flawless, my kids are not, and things happen! It's a whole lot cheaper to have this coverage then to replace those computers.

Normally, I never buy the extra warranty protection, etc. This was one exception, and I'm still glad I did it.

YES! So worth it!!!

I had to send mine back to Apple and they didn't charge me anything for it, and you get telephone support, which, when you computer goes on a Sunday afternoon, is quite handy.

yes, you should get it
