Applicants for 2013

Well, since this is Fang Jrs first acceptance, this one a very special letter! The pressure is off because Fang Jr has been accepted at a school he really likes - with $$ to boot. Now, no matter what other opportunities present themselves, he always has something wonderful to fall back on.

fang - what are the other three? it's looking like a possibility fang jr and i might end up at the same place.

He's waiting for Beloit's decision, which should come soon. He's also applying to Carleton and Macalester, and maybe Vassar as a wild card.

Where else are you applying, magnetic? If you choose K, will you go on LandSea? Fang Jr would definitely go, and in fact that's one reason why he might choose K over another college, should he get another acceptance.

Ah, okay. For me it's Carleton, Macalester, and Grinnell.

I'm actually not sure about LandSea. It depends on whether or not my parents want to front the extra cash and if I can get over my utter lack of outdoorsy-ness. (I was in this YMCA thing called Indian Princesses with my dad, and one year instead of camping our troop rented a timeshare/condo-type thing near the campsite.)

congrats to all who have gotten in so far! i probably won't hear back for a few months, especially since my teacher rec isn't even in yet :/

to those who have gotten scholarships: what were your grades like? i am so worried about money and it would be awesome to get a nice package from K.

A little off topic, but regarding LandSea...my S is a freshman this year at K and went on LandSea this summer. He had never camped and was as far from outdoorsy as you can be. We were stunned that he even would consider it. He loved it and had a fabulous time. It was much harder than he had anticipated. He did train physically all summer for it and was glad he did. It was an experience that most people will never do and he really learned so much.

Congrats to all those accepted recently!

Grinnell was high on Fang Jr's list until he visited. We live at the base of the mountains. Iowa was just too flat and too treeless for him.

If Fang Jr plans LandSea, I'll force him to learn to swim next summer. I worry too much already; I don't want to be worrying that he'll drown.

Fang Jr's scores are great (NMSF) but his grades are crummy. He got a scholarship anyway. I think everybody gets some money.

Congrats to Fang Jr. and you my dear Cardinal Fang! Hope you have been able to celebrate. Whew.... :)

Cardinal Fang, what made Fang Jr. choose Midwest colleges?

He didn't affirmatively choose the Midwest; it was more a process of elimination.

He wouldn't go to the South because he thinks it's too politically and socially conservative. He wouldn't go to the Southwest because he doesn't like it.

He was looking for a school for nerdy, quirky kids who value intellectual pursuits. When he looked through the Princeton Review to pick out the schools that seemed to fit his criteria, he found Midwest schools. And then when we visited he liked "Midwest nice." He felt at home with the casual, welcoming attitude.

He has had some Eastern schools on the list from time to time, but I think having visited the Midwest schools, he thinks he has enough to choose from. He's applying to some schools that are harder to get into than K, but I wouldn't bet against him choosing K even if he gets in everywhere.

Most ppl say that the South is conservative, but I think most ppl in AR or TN are rly nice.

btw I am applying to K in RD. I don't think I have a good shot but K is worth a try!

Good luck, rogueknight!

pseudo: I'm definitely what you'd call and "upward trend" in grades, haha. I even had 2 Cs (!!!) freshman year, then it kind of skyrocketed upward sophomore and junior year. Straight As except for math (C/C+ sophomore, Bs junior)...

oh, and i got nmsf if that matters.

Thanks for the insight, Cardinal Fang. 'Midwest nice' is pretty nice! Those of us who live here take it for granted sometimes. My s has to finish his 'Why Macalester' essay and then will be done with the application process. Yeah... Since we couldn't visit this summer, we'll have to do some traveling later this spring after the financial aid packages show up and son narrows down his choices (finances are a huge factor for us). 'Robotics season' (six weeks of meetings six days per week) starts for s and hubby next week, so it will be good to have it all done.

If I had to pick, I think Kalamazoo would be my choice for my son (but that is without visiting). But...I don't get to pick!
