Great! My DD is signed up for an overnight the night before. Hoping this visit brings her to a final decision, between Baylor, TCU and Trinity. Anyone else doing the overnight before March Tiger Friday?
Trustees Scholarship felt like it should have been Murchison, but she could have been on the cusp. That core calculation could have come out funny I suppose.
Still holds true every college if she interviewed, visited, and was in the middle 50% she was accepted if she was just middle 50%, but did not interview or visit waitlisted.
just learned wait listed. Must be pretty competitive as he is National Merit Scholar, 1550 SAT, 4.0 GPA, #1 in class, and involved in 3 sports, choir, play, band, Student Council, class officer, etc. To be honest, I am not sure what else he could have done to satisfy their stated selection criteria.
@GeauxBU, did he express interest? If not, this is probably yield protection. It’s becoming more common in RD with kids whose stats are way high for a school and who haven’t demonstrated interest. They assume that they’re a safety school for the applicant and will waitlist to protect their yield rate (which is a huge factor in rankings).
Thanks for a possible rationale. I appreciate that.
He hasn’t expressed a high level of interest in any single school, but he was intrigued by Trinity. The son of a good friend graduated from Trinity and had a great experience, so he wanted to check it out. The plan was to visit schools in April that he was accepted to. Now…it is completely off his list.
I understand metrics, but rejecting a strong candidate to protect your yield rate… sounds a bit unethical to me. Maybe I am wrong…
I understand your frustration. Part of my thinking here, specific to Trinity, is that they probably expect the high stats, high interest kids to apply EA because that’s what gets you eligible to compete in the Tower scholarship weekend (earlier this month). That’s the full tuition cholarship competition (300 kids compete for 20 full tuition scholarships).
A similar thing happened with my daughter and Baylor. They deferred her from EA despite a 4.0, tons of APs/dual credits, 34 ACT, strong ECs and rec letters… and their average applicant test scores well below. In fact, they sent her a bunch of emails asking her to come to various scholars’ weekends for highly qualified applicants. But she didn’t go to any of them because it was not one of her preferred schools; it was a back up. And life was really busy, etc. low and behold, deferred. She had never visited, didn’t include any optional essays, just the bare minimum, and also their app is free. So it was a logical conclusion that she threw in an app “just in case” (which is, in fact, accurate), and that she was unlikely to attend if accepted (also accurate).
Anyways, sorry that happened to y’all. We really liked Trinity a lot but it’s more than we want to pay even after the Murchison scholarship. Tough decision, but we have decided it doesn’t make sense for her to accept when she has a similar acceptance (Plan II honors at UT Austin) for lower cost.
I really do appreciate the responses and logic. I hope everything works out well for your daughter in Austin!
He did not apply early admission anywhere. He has other good options with strong aid packages, and still has schools to hear from. Nonetheless, it is indeed frustrating to not get in to one of his favorites when his qualifications appear to exceed their minimum standards.
Once more, thanks for the pep talk?
Something else that may factor in: an article published late last year about colleges where early applications matter. Trinity ranked as number 4, admitting 68.7% of early applicants (both action and decision) and only 12.7% of regular decision applicants. While I’m sure much of this difference is self-selection (stronger applicants tend to apply early) It also has to do with a large percentage of the class that has already been offered a slot at the university.
Here is the article I got the data from:
https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/the-short-list-college/articles/colleges-where-early-applicants-have-an-edge
Applications to Trinity have been skyrocketing, and the early action/decision applicants have already received their acceptances and rejections, and a fair number have committed and deposited by this point. So it may not be as much about protecting a yield as much as the class is already full and there are only so many people that can be admitted. The university appears to be very happy with the ~2,500 student population and isn’t looking to grow.
I hope this doesn’t deter you! not all colleges are like this, so no need to worry. I wish you the best of luck with your college search!
We had an excellent experience at Tiger Friday, March 22nd. My DD did an overnight with a Trinity student the night before which was a very positive experience. My daughter hopes to make her final decision this week, but preliminary indications point to Trinity. We are excited! If you have any questions about the curriculum, or the overnight, let me know. I highly recommend the overnight visit if you have the chance to do it!
Officially committed today, very excited!
@bigchungus785 congrats! My daughter commited last week as well.
My daughter committed today!
