My D is a high school junior and attended the international thes festival this past summer.
She indicated that reps from Webster were there and were very accomodating with answering questions and giving advice. Hence Webster has shot to the top of her schools of interest.

Questions we have are for the MT program, how many applicants apply and how many are accepted, what ACT or SAT scores are for MT applicants, and lastly what high school GPA / class rank are sought for the program

Taylorsdad,
I am sure that a Webster rep will answer your questions shortly. They're really good about that on this thread.

My D is a junior in the MT program. I believe when she auditioned they said around 500 or so auditioned for the Musical Theatre and Acting combined but my memory is a little fuzzy. There were 18 in her freshman class.

I will say that she LOVES it there. There are many opportunities, in fact this semester she was lucky enough to be cast in a St. Louis Rep. show (Emma) which opens in a couple of weeks. She loves all the faculty and feels she is getting a really strong acting background for her MT degree which is exactly what she wanted.

Having the midwest theatre auditions on the Webster campus is also a plus.

Let me know if I can answer any questions from a parents perspective.
Marianne

No we are from Montana. It is a long and/or expensive trip. That is the only downside to her choice. I see you are from Iowa. I know there is an acting major in my D's class from Iowa. There are probably others too.

I don't recall specifically how many MT students applied last year, but I know there were several hundred applicants for MT/Acting combined. There is no set number of how many students are accepted into the Conservatory for MT or for Acting. There were around 50 people accepted into MT and Acting combined last year, and of those, I think 22 came. Of those 22, 10 are Musical Theatre majors. I could be off by a few, that's off the top of my head.

I'm a sophomore, and at the beginning of last year there were 20 Acting/MT majors, 14 of which were Musical Theatre.

As far as I know, the only academic requirement for admission to the Conservatory is admission to Webster University.

I highly recommend this program. I'm over a year in and I absolutely love it. The faculty are top-notch and accommodating, the campus is lovely, the work environment is supportive and encouraging and the productions are phenomenal.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply - October is always a busy time of year for us.

Acceptance to Webster and the Musical Theatre program is a two-step process. A student needs to apply for regular academic acceptance first, and, if admitted, audition for specific acceptance into Musical Theatre. The two steps are actually rather separate - if a student is not admitted academically, then the quality of their audition is really a moot point. Conversely, a valedictorian with a top test score would no doubt be admitted academically, but then it's up to the Conservatory as to whether they are chosen for acceptance into Musical Theatre. If that student was denied to Musical Theatre, they could still enroll at Webster, but it would have to be in a different area of study, since the Conservatory is closed to non-majors.

Webster is generally considered a "moderately selective" school. Students most likely to be accepted will usually have a GPA of 3.0/4.0 scale, a composite ACT of 21 or combined SAT or 1600, and rank in the top half to top third of their graduating class.

The Conservatory auditions and accepts incoming classes in Acting and Musical Theatre in combination. When a student auditions, they are auditioning for acceptance into the Performance side of the Conservatory which includes Acting and Musical Theatre. The department does not set specific acceptance numbers for each - they want the best talent, and every year is a little different. One year there might be a few more incoming Acting majors, and next it'll be more in Musical Theatre.

In any given year, the Conservatory will conduct one-on-one auditions with over 450 students, with the goal of enrolling around 25. Taking into account the necessity of accepting enough students to achieve that figure, the overall acceptance rate is usually somewhere between 10% - 15%.

Hope this information is helpful, and please feel free to jump on with any other questions. I promise we will get to them eventually.

I too have a D attending Webster. She is in her frosh year and couldn't be happier. Although she was an IB student in high school with a strong gpa and class standing, her test scores were average. I found that the academic requirements to enter Webster were average, but the better grades and test scores benefit the students in offers of grants and scholarships.

The graduation rate for each incoming class typically ranges anywhere from 12 - 20. Like all schools, the reasons for those who don't graduate vary. More specific information can be given at the time of audition - just ask.
