Does anyone know when schools say that an application must be submitted before an audition can be scheduled, do they mean "application" as every single piece, including SAT scores, transcripts, teacher recs., etc...? Or do they mean when they say "application" just the application form and any supplemental forms that a student sends when they hit the "submit" button?

In most cases they only mean you have to have hit “submit” (and pay the application fee of course!) before you can schedule an audition. Michigan is an exception-- they actually review your application before you’re allowed to schedule. (Which is kind of nice as it saves you the trouble of auditioning if you have no chance.)

AdaQuince: They are all a little different in what they consider the application, but it is usually clearly spelled out on their websites and if in doubt, email or call the Department to confirm.

Thanks for the answers. I have not really had much luck on the websites as most schools don’t seem to breakdown “the application” to a level that clearly states what pieces they are looking to see in their in-boxes before auditions will be scheduled. I hate to resort to calling the schools, because I am the parent, but I also know that my applicant would not call just to ask this question. We were smart and asked the question during some of our school visits, but not all. I am just trying to plan the logistics (airline tix, hotels, pet boarding, etc) of all these auditions and it would be helpful to know when we can expect to even have a shot at scheduling these things or when we will have confirmations from some of these schools. For example, do we go ahead and send SAT scores now to get a jump on a certain audition date, even though a second take is coming this Sat. and scores will be out a few weeks following. I’d rather just send the best of scores at once. And just how long does it take our district to get the transcripts out? who knows? our request went in at the end of Aug. and they still have not been sent. Just looking to selfishly ease some of the panic. : )

AdaQuince, for a question like this, you can call admissions and do not even have to give your name. While I think the student herself should be the one to contact professors and the like, this is just a secretarial question and has nothing to do with the applicant personally. Truly, just call to clarify such a question and again, no need to give your name.

Thanks, soozievt!

I had to play this role last year for my daughter as well. She was in school all day and with the 3 hour time difference between the East and West coast, if she attempted to make those calls after school no one on the East would have been in the office to answer the phone. I never gave my name to whoever answered and nor did they ask me who I was. I explained that I was calling on behalf of an applicant and that since I was the one making the travel arrangements, I needed to clarify what was required in order to schedule the audition. I’m certain it is the kind of call they get a lot and nobody is keeping a black book. They will probably appreciate that you are on top of it.

Also, U Mich was the only school of all that my daughter applied to where “must apply first” meant application, references, transcripts and test scores. For all others it simply meant that you had to have hit “send” on the application. Don’t trust that for your situation if it isn’t clear by the school’s website but just by way of background, I haven’t heard of any school other than U Mich where everything had to be in in advance.

Best of luck!

FYI. My son submitted his CMU Common App on Oct 1 and got email today that he can schedule his audition. So it takes just a few days for that school.

My daughter filled out the online audition request form for Marymount Manhattan and received a call on her cell phone within five minutes to confirm the spelling of her name! No kidding, maybe even three minutes.

We still cannot sign up for the CMU audition yet even though the application was submitted 9/27. You have to wait until you application is actually processed before the system will allow you to choose your audition date. Patience is not my strong suit :)

My son got his with no problem. He got the email saying they had his application and signed up for an audition that day. Does it say “downloaded” on the Common App site? As soon as you get the email, you use your common app number to get the audition date. He submitted the app Oct 2, got the email Oct 4, and the audition date the same day. You then can use your app number to “see where you are in the process”. I checked his today and it shows what they have and what they don’t.

Walker1194, we didn’t have a problem either. I think CMU is the one where you use your Common App ID to get on and schedule your audition. As soon as we got the email, we were able to log on and get an audition date, and we got their email within 24 hours of submitting the app.

Yes. Us too. My sons Common App showed downloaded. A day later we used his Common App ID and scheduled his audition. Call Leigh in admissions if you have a problem. She helped us. We we’re having trouble paying the $85 fee and she sent a link.

I agree the student should correspond whenever possible, but sometimes this isn’t possible with a 3 hour time change, school until 5PM, and performances. I never left my name if I inquired with Admissions or MT departments on her behalf in the application period.

After applications were submitted and D was in the selection process SHE corresponded via cell phone during lunch time mostly, but I did help out with scheduling her campus/class visits when she was in her final decision making process.

D and I really had to coordinate EVERYTHING during the whole process…applications, essays, payments, transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, letters of recommendation, personal and performance calendars, her work, my work, school, auditions, mailings, flights, hotels, rental cars…for 14 audition schools.

There is NO WAY at 17, she could have taken all that on by herself despite her being super conscientious and a top student. I’m so happy it is all just a distant memory : )

Walker, I know my D is Tech, but we had some issues with the Common App and CMU. When I thought it was submitted, it was actually only showing as started. Go back in and make sure the little triangle by the college name is green and not yellow. Our internet had issues for a week, and while I thought it was submitted, it had not been. On Wednesday evening, we submitted again, and this time the green triangle appeared. That was 10/3, on 10/4 it showed downloaded, and yesterday morning we got the email from CMU saying congrats for applying. It then said to go ahead and register for the interview, which we did. If you submitted 9/27 then you should be able to register with no problem now.

Yep. I went in and checked. Even though I paid and I thought it was sent on 9/27 (yes it had the green triangle by it), the CA apparently kicked out D’s essay so the application did not go. I reloaded it Tuesday and sent it. Still can’t sign up for audition slot. I called CMU this morning and they don’t even see the app. They are having the CA guru call me later to figure out what is going on. No problems with the other CA school apps…

Did you upload essay as pdf? I hope things click for you!!

Walker, it may be there this morning. That’s about the time frame it took when we had to re submit my D’s. Hang in there, I know it’s nerve wracking!

Anyone get past the pre screen for Michigan yet? If so, when did you upload? Was your app complete with all forms?

Got it resolved and got D her audition slot :). The lady at CMU was really nice even though she couldn’t explain what happened. She went through all of the attached materials to make sure they are there.
