Application Confusions

Could anyone please clarify two applications questions for me:

1) Are students in the Univeristy of Michigan called Wolverines(eg. students from Cornell are called Cornellians)?

2) Is "Umich" the abbriviated name of the University of Michigan(e.g. NYU is the abbriviated name for New York University)? For the application essays, can I use the term Umich?

Thanks a lot for your kind help!

Wolverines is UMich's athletic name, just how Notre Dame is called the Fighting Irish. Yes, UMich is the abbreviation for University of Michigan, but idk if you should use it on your essay. I doubt it would hurt, go for it.

In my personal essay, I would like to say that I am looking forward to becoming a "Woleverine"(although I don't play sports), it that okay?

Yep, that should be fine.

Yeah, because when you are a student at UMich you're a wolverine.

Thanks for the help! See you all at Ann Arbor next fall, hopefully!

Most people here in Michigan refer to the University of Michigan simply as "U of M".

Nobody at the University of Michigan calls it "umich." For short, people will say "Michigan" or U of M. In your essay, I would use the "University of Michigan" and "Michigan," no other abbreviations.

the only reason the whole "Umich" thing started is because the everyone's email addresses are @umich.edu

Yeah, because of email and the web address, people do, indeed, sometimes say "UMich." I do, and I have heard it on and off campus. But it's more common to hear people say "U of M" or even just "Michigan."

U of M students are indeed "Wolverines"
