Application Date

So it is my understanding that housing preference is determined by application date. Would that be the date on which the actual application was submitted? Or the date by which all of the supporting materials were received?

D submitted the application within the first week that it was available, and her test scores have been received. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a while before her transcript is sent in.

Her (large public) HS is part of a pilot program in the city that involves sending official transcripts through Parchment. In the past, students submitted a form to the guidance office, paid a small fee, and transcripts and school reports were sent to the requested entities. But now, the students are supposed to have them sent (for free) through Parchment. But her transcript as it is on Parchment is not the most current version. And the school does not yet have any idea how school reports will be submitted. Her guidance counselor told her that they don’t have time to figure that out yet because they’re still working on student schedules. He said that it would probably be about the third week of school before they have time to work on it.

Well school doesn’t start until after Labor Day, so the third week of school could be the end of September. So will Clemson consider her to have applied early in August, or early in October?

I am not exactly sure. I would contact the housing office and admissions for clarification . When we went to Discover Clemson Day in May they weren’t specific.

We were told it’s the date you apply…not the date everything is complete . D is a current freshman and got her first choice of housing . She applied early August last yr but had the same issues . Our hs never sends out the transcripts until end of September or early October as they wait to get the rank put on transcript and we are in NJ and school also starts later . D was fine . ( but I stressed about that last year …it didn’t hurt her at all )

@NJMOM3 Thanks for the info. My son has applied to Clemson for 2016. How is housing there? He hopes to get accepted into Calhoun Honors and the new dorms that are being constructed will house the Honors, but we don’t know much about the other housing . Any info would be greatly appreciated .

^ The present honors housing (Holmes)is very nice and of course the new building will be awesome I’m sure . There is a ton of construction going on around campus so it seems like next fall will be a very nice time to come in as a freshman . D decided not to apply to honors since she wanted to be in the Health Human Development LLC in Clemson House . She is with a ton of nursing / prehealth science majors and a few education majors which is what she wanted . We were told Clemson house will be knocked down next year and the LLC s that it presently houses will be in Holmes ( the present honors dorm) next year when the new honors dorm supposedly opens up . D loves her room ( has a full kitchen and private bathroom) but like I said this is the last year for Clemson House. There is construction going on right behind Clemson House which is supposed to be upper classmen housing as well
As housing for Bridge students , however I’m not sure that will be done by next fall or not . D tells me many students chose McCabe as well which is also newer and suite style like Honors . The rest of the housing appears fairly old , however students don’t seem to mind … Shoeboxes and Bryan Hall ( high rises ) are old but some freshman like the atmosphere . She said the dorm that students complain about the most is Johnstone which I’m pretty sure are old military barracks . D has had no complaints so far after 2 weeks . She does have a long walk everywhere from clemson house which you would not have with the honors dorm , but she’s handling it fine . I don’t think u can go wrong with the honors housing if he gets in ! Good luck to your son !

We have been on campus quite a few times as we live about 45 minutes from Clemson. My son loved Clemson house it’s too bad they’re tearing it down. He is planning on majoring in CS so if doesn’t get into Calhoun, he will probably look at the RISE living / learning community. I’m so amazed at the number of NJ students there are at Clemson. Our other Instate option also has quite a few students from NJ with NJ being the most represented state at that school other than SC

Thank you both so much for your input! The response from @NJMOM3 really made us breathe a little easier. Just in case anything had changed from last year, we decided to take the advice given by @carolinamom2boys and so D called Admissions to ask.

They corroborated that application date was based upon the date the application and fee was received and not the supporting materials.

Thanks for helping out a stressed first-timer! Clemson is one of her top choices.

@MostlyDolores What state do you live in? Have you been on campus yet? Lots of construction and great things going on there. We’re headed to opening football game on Saturday. Go Tigers!!

@carolinamom2boys We’re in Virginia. We’ve actually visited Clemson twice. The second time happened to be on the day of the Spring football game which I think is what propelled Clemson from ‘definitely on the list’ to ‘this place is amazing!’ She was inspired by the sea of orange.

D and H would both love to be able to attend a football game this fall, but we don’t think we’ll be able to work it out with D’s commitments and the distance. H especially wanted to go to the game against his alma mater but that’s Homecoming Weekend at D’s school. I’m not convinced that he won’t just head off to it himself - he still keeps checking for tickets!

You seem very knowledgeable about Clemson. I hope you don’t mind if I direct any other questions your way.

Anytime. I messaged you
