My D will be applying ED at another school and will not find out if she's accepted until possibly 12/15 and cannot apply anywhere else during that ED period. Seems a problem to those who want UT as a second choice.......Am I missing something?

She’s not allowed to apply to UT, and then withdraw her application if she’s accepted to the other school?

Hi, maidenMom, may I suggest you go back and read that college’s ED rules carefully–generally, they only bar competing apps to other early admission programs, but expressly allow apps under any regular decision program. You’re right, they can’t prevent your daughter from applying to her home state public university system. If that is not clear from the rules you’re reading on the college’s website, call the admission office to get clarification.

Good luck!

(Ooops, cross-posted with MaineLonghorn!)

That may be true about other competing ED programs and the state school is okay - hope so. When at the other school’s info sessions, they were very clear about finding out if you applied elsewhere and would decline you and contact the other school to report it.

I will check that out - thanks.

Still wondering why UT’s RD is a whole month earlier than all the other schools she’s looked at

UT’s deadline is probably earlier because they have WAY more applicants to deal with than most other schools.

What you’re saying about the other school is unheard of… it just can’t be true.

A lot of large state schools generally have earlier deadlines than privates.

So not be a complete stalker, but I looked at your other posts OP and it looks like your D is focusing on Rice and Williams. Both have ED policies that are basically the same, decision on December 15 and both clearly state that the student can only have one ED application and that all other applications must be withdrawn upon acceptance. It goes on to say * once the acceptance is given, * no other applications are allowed. Which is basically the same policy with every other single ED school out there with a few exceptions.

If Rice is her ED school, I would certainly get an app into UT ASAP to up her odds for honors programs. My daughter graduated from one of the top high schools in TX and only two students in the entire class snagged an acceptance from Rice. (Rice was not my D’s college list as she was looking for a school with Greek life)

And if you do that UT app, once it is in the UT system, go on and pay the $50 housing deposit. (Or get on a housing application list from Hardin House or Scottish Rite–private dorms) Housing is extremely tight at UT and when that $50 is paid determines your D’s choice in housing. I know UT is her safety, but I also know a basketful of kids who are attend UT as their safety this year. Most are in supplemental housing because they never thought it would come to that. That $50 is refundable if she goes elsewhere.

^ And if it’s Rice and Williams you are concerned about, I’m pretty sure both use the Common App Early Decision Agreement. The language makes it very clear–you can submit as many other apps as you like, just no other ED app.
