How strict are state schools on deadlines? My kid just talked to his cousin about the University of Montana. We did a little research and he is really interested, but the deadline for the honors college was Dec. 31, and the priority deadline for the WUE scholarship was Dec. 31. Does priority mean he can still try?
Thank you!

Call them and ask. But get the app in today at the latest.

Thanks so much! I wished I had joined this forum months ago. I’m afraid I’ve led my son down the wrong path. We let him self-direct his search – a good thing usually. However, he fell in love in a several LACs and has only applied there. I didn’t run numbers until just recently and was a little shocked by the total dollar figure and what it would all mean in loans.
He’d thrive at a small school, and he received some nice merit aid packages (with 3.7 UW gpa/30 ACT), but based on what our EFC estimates calculate out to, there’s still no way we can likely afford those schools without incurring significant debt.
Now, we are scrambling to find him a great state school that has programs like WUE to help out-of-state kids.
I’d appreciate any advice anyone has! Thank you. And thanks to all those who post. Over the past couple of days I’ve been reading, I’m amazed by the depth of knowledge.

My D attends an out-of-state public. We found the admissions and financial aid offices to be very friendly and helpful. We were up against the scholarship deadline and they allowed us to fax in copies of her SAT scores and transcript to “complete” her file while they were waiting on the official copies.

What type of program is your S looking for? If you post some details about major, georgraphic location, schools size, etc. you may find about some programs that fit the bill. There are so many knowledgeable parents/students on here willing to share. Best of luck!

My experience with schools is that they are pretty strict with deadlines. But, even the most strict schools will let you off with a couple days if you call them and give them a really serious reason (e.g. health problem).

Thanks so much for the help and support. My son is going to make a couple of calls on Monday as we went through and made a list of possibilities. He’s been filling out the apps, but we will wait to talk to Admissions before submitting.

We are still confused by what the words “priority deadline” mean as opposed to deadline.

We are searching for some good state schools (preferably small) in the West that have merit aid for out-of-state kids (like the WUE program) or will consider out-of-state kids for other scholarships. For instance, UW wouldn’t be an option as we understand that they don’t offer much assistance (need or merit) for OOS. (Well, that and UW isn’t small, plus the deadline is long, long gone!) He’s interested in studying some sort of business or social sciences.

You probably already have the list of WUE schools but just in case:

I have heard really good things about the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State. I know the school itself is very large but maybe the small honors college would appeal to your S. Two of my nephews attended ASU and really loved it. An the deadline isn’t unitl March 1 although obviously earlier applications are encouraged.

Thanks, AustinMTmom. I’ll mention the Honors College to him! Sounds like a good one.
