I saw on the FSU website that there is an October deadline and a January deadline. I was told that getting my application in by the October deadline will improve my chances of admission...especially since I'm an OOS applicant. (Makes sense to me...early bird gets the worm?)

Well, I most likely won't have my 2nd set of SAT scores by October 17th. Should I send in my application with my June SAT scores, and then send in my October scores ASAP? As for transcripts, I feel like I could improve my GPA/class rank a tiny bit this semester - but I'd be getting my transcript AFTER students are notified of their admissions status.

So my question is: Should I send in my application and files in by October, then send in my new SAT scores in a bit after October 17th...or should I wait, get everything together, and send my application with all documents by January 18th?

YES YES YES. You application will be accepted as long as there is at least a set of SAT scores for the October deadline. And they WILL accept updated scores from the October sitting if you have submitted a completed application by the deadline. Just get it in. The advantage of the early group far outweighs any change in GPA for one (fall) semester.

The worst case scenario is being deferred. They do not decline anyone the first go around, so you still have a chance for the second application deadline if you are deferred.

They get your SAT scores electronically if you list FSU on your SAT. And they get them rather quickly. Once they are available to you online, they are at FSU.

Awesome! That really helps, thank you sunnyflorida. You said that they don’t decline anyone the first round; just making sure, does that include out of staters too?

I’m definitely gonna turn in the rest of my app real soon…let’s hope I get in!

In years past, you were only accepted or deferred during the first round. I am not aware of declines until the second notification period. Things change, that was the policy. You can email and ask. They usually return email questions in 1-2 days.

At a Q&A session when I first toured FSU a couple of years ago an admission officer said FSU does reject some students first go round. I guess if you don’t have enough of the required core classes to catch up with minimum requirement high school senior year, or if your high school grades are so off that you can’t realistically be expected to get up to FSU GPA minimum threshold for admission, I guess they might reject you flat out and not defer you first notification batch.

Too it might possibly be a little easier these days for OOS applicants to get into FSU now compared to previous years if FSU is looking for higher tuition paid by OOS students compared to Florida resident students paying the lower resident tuition. With money so tight FSU is probably looking for any extra revenue it can get its hands on.

The November scores will be released before then, but I would not rely on them being considered at FSU. By that time, they likely will have already decided. Only way they’d really help would be if you were borderline, and they gave you a tiny advantage over someone else.

That wouldn’t work for the first decision, which is made available online on December 14. Plus they have to have everything finalized before then; they aren’t going to wait until the day before to make their decisions.

I am just saying that I would not rely on your November SAT scores for your application. The only time I would even take the November test was if you took the October one and did not feel all that great about how you did. In all likelihood the scores will not influence your application in either way.

Jena- What is his ACT score and how is everything else other than the ACT? Can he take it again in October?

The application fee is $30. If that is not a burden, and everything else is in good stead, why not go for it? If a Fall 2012 start isn’t offered a Summer start could still be a possibility.

This is the weird thing - he has a 4.00 weighted GPA - mostly all honors classes since 9th grade but he has only achieved a 23 as his highest ACT score with English being the lowest score at 21. He is taking the ACT again October 22nd but this will be his third attempt and I’m not sure his scores will increase much, if any. He is on the high school swim team and also swims for a club team at a local community college.

My oldest son is a freshman at UF so I think this son wants to go to a school to rival his brother’s school in name recognition. I guess we can apply for summer and see what happens but I really have my doubts about him being accepted for fall.

A solid GPA, class ranking, ec’s and essay will help to round out his profile. Test scores are not the end all/ be all, nor should they be. At a minimum have him apply to FSU as a ‘reach’ school. What’s the worst thing that could happen?

Looks like he is going to get working on his essay and will meet the October 17th deadline. You’re right - the worst that can happen is that they say “no”.
