Application Deadlines

Hey,
I'm applying from India and am confused about the application deadlines. It says Dec.31 (Postmarked)
What does postmarked mean? Does it need to reach the college by dec.31 or what?

It means it you should send it by 31. December :) But don't wait until the last minute send your application at least a week before the deadline :)

Well, they hav cllearly stated that ur app should REACH them by the postmarked date!!hope this answers ur question....

u only need to send ur recommendations and school report(transcripts) by mail....the rest (essays, ECs etc) can be done online

"Well, they hav cllearly stated that ur app should REACH them by the postmarked date!!hope this answers ur question...."
postmark date = date on which the post office sends your file.
(post - mark).
How could it reach the adm office by the date it gets sent??

My Dear,as he is applyin from India,he is required to send it earlier so that it should REACH by that date,I know the meaning of post-MARK....the postal sevices are in abysmal type of condition...they wont even clear the post box unitil next day...and the posts are in very numerous in number.....and u said postmark=date when post office sends our app.....and it wont be sent until 3 days........so better be cautious than to regret....think before u type...

Well I'm from Romania, and normal mail takes 2-3 weeks to get there. Almost everyone sends their apps in the last minute, no one had problems with these things.

lol(sheesh)
I dont know about ROMANIA but if u were to send a post through NORMAL post then u will hav to post it atleast 1 month (or so) earlier!!

And earlier I was talkin about couriers..
there is DHL but not famous..

Ok, tell me this. How could a letter reach their office before its postmark date?
It obviously can't. Therefore, they just want you to send it by that date (including).
There are schools who want your app in their office by some date, but in that case they will specifically state so.

As long as it gets there in a decent amount of time (1-2 weeks for ED, even a month for RD) it's ok. This is my second year of applying, I have tens of emails saying this from schools I asked.

Just for example, the only school that admitted me last year was cornell, and I actually sent the app 2 days after their postmark, without even asking or informing them of anything.

My dear, plz read the above things and then argue......even sending ur posts 1 month earlier dont assure u that it will REACH in 1 month, for eg.-I hav sent a mail(a year ago) via NORMAL post to UAE and guess wat.......it reachd in approx 45 days.....and US is way far from INDIA.....

I alwyas thought POSTMARKED =
The last date your application (not the online shiz) must arrive at the school by.

So, Postmarked 1 January:
I would send it in mid december, so it will reach the school BEFORE 1 jan, or ON 1 jan.

It doesnt make sense if someone sent their paper app ON 1 January (as in, going to the post office on 1 january).. Because they could use snail mail and it could arrive at the school duirng mid February! That just seems wrong.

NoFX:thats wat I was tryin to put into words....thanx..

if you use fedex it'll reach there within 3 days at most, i tried

should we really be worried..? i planned to send all by EMS and if there are a few i have to delay i'll send by fedex. I think that should be fine..

I did too! :)
Fedex is just a little more expensive though.

i guess we internationals should not be that much worried about the time it takes the mails to reach the universities coz everyone knows that international mails are everything but reliable and even the admission officers are aware of that....add to that the high costs of courier services....

Courier and EMS are both ****ing expensive!

yeahhh......
