Application/Decision

I hear you! It’s the only school that I know of that still mails letters. When my son sent in his SAT scores the college board said they were sending them all electronically except to Rose Human - to whom they were mailing the scores by US post office. WHAT? I still don’t know if that’s true - how bizarre! Still it’s an awesome school and I wish you all the luck in the world!

It is true about test scores - sent manually instead of electronically to R-H. Ironic that the only school to be so antiquated has top rated computer science and computer engineering programs… anyway R-H is in my daughter’s top 3 so we are really anxious to get that letter.

What are her other two!? My son is also very interested in WPI & Colorado School of Mines.

Son received acceptance letter today, we live in GA.

Current student here, let me know if anyone has any specific questions about Rose that I can answer.

Good luck to all!

I got mine today, I live in MN.

Hey Delons,
What can you say about the food now that the provider has changed?
How about the dorms? Are all of them air conditioned?
And music. Do you have an orchestra this year?
And how is electrical engineering?
Any comment about the lawsuit from the student with disabilities?

How hard is it to get an A?

Daughter received EA acceptance today :slight_smile: . Washington State.

@Delons

  1. What graduate schools have RHIT students been admitted to ?
  2. Typically what % of students go to graduate schools ?

My daughter received her acceptance letter today. We are in TX.

I am a sophomore, so the food provider changed when I came into the school. I never got a chance to try the old one. Regarding the new one though, it’s hit or miss, but there’s always something to eat.

The main dining hall is open Monday-Friday for Breakfast 7:00-10:00am, Lunch 11:00am-2:00pm, and Dinner 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Saturday 10:00 - 2:00pm for brunch and Sunday 10:00am - 2:00pm brunch, 5:00 pm - 7:00pm dinner. There are 2 main serving areas which have different entrees. There is a “grill like” section which has burgers, sausages, fries, sandwiches, and that changes every day. There’s also a pizza station, a vegetarian section, a sandwich station, a dessert area, and a salad bar. There’s also an omelette station for breakfast. There’s not much that you would want that they don’t have. The food varies from yuck to amazing. For example, tonight was a special Christmas dinner which included beef brisket and au gratin potatos along with tons of different desserts. Other nights are less spectacular and included dishes like chicken parm bake, stir fry, or some type of chicken. You can check out the menu at http://rose-hulman.cafebonappetit.com/ to get an idea of what is on the menu.

There’s also a restaurant in the basement of the union called Chauncey’s. Chauncey’s serves lunch and dinner every day which is all made to order. The menu includes personal “flatbread” pizzas, burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. There is also late night from 9:00pm to 11:00pm which has a menu of 1/2lb Burger, 12 wings, mac and cheese, or buffalo chicken sandwich along with a choice of side. Personally late night is my favorite place to get food, it’s really really good.

There are a couple of other small food places on campus including Subway (which might close?), Beanies, and Moench. The last two serve coffee and grab and go sandwiches, salads, pre-made meals, and a couple of other small items.

I have high standards and I am satisfied with the food. The dining situation works most of the time for me, and Chauncey’s is always a good backup if the main dining hall’s menu doesn’t sound good.

Regarding the dorms, I came in with the impression that all college freshman dorms were terrible. I was pleasantly surprised. The rooms are big enough for everything I had. I lived in BSB freshman year and I am currently in Percopo this year (but will be moving off campus next year to save money). The only two freshman dorms which do not have air conditioning are Speed and Deming (except for the attic). There are pros and cons to each freshman dorm, but everybody thinks their freshman dorm is the best, so I can’t suggest one over the other.

I’m not too sure about music on campus as I am not involved in any of it. I do believe there is an orchestra. I will say that Hatfield Hall is one of the best parts about Rose. As a student, you get free tickets to any shows (normally cost anywhere from $20 to $40 for the public). The shows I’ve been to so far include HomeFree, The Hot Sardines, The Four Freshman, and Under the Streetlamp. This Saturday Lightwire Theatre (They were on Americas Got Talent) is performing. It’s a part of Rose not too much students take advantage of.

I am a Computer Engineering and Software Engineering double major so I can comment on the Electrical Engineering department since it’s the department of my primary major (ECE, Electrical and Computer Engineering). As a freshman, the ECE class you will take are ECE 160, Engineering Practice, a class which focuses on Arduino and Projects, ECE 180, Introduction to Signal Processing, and ECE 203, DC Circuits. Let me know if there is anything specific about the department that you want to know as there is so much I could talk about.

I saw a news article about the lawsuit, but I don’t know any specifics nor have I heard anything. I will say that the professors (and the placement rate) are the reason I came to Rose. The story I like to share is that a friend of mine once emailed a professor to ask a question. That professor emailed him back, and came back to Rose (at 8:00pm) after he had dinner to help him out. With class sizes of 20-30, professors know your name, where you sit, and are personally interested in you.

How hard is it to get an A? It really depends on you, not the class. If you have some intuition and are willing to work, an A is possible in every class. If you slack off and get behind, you’ll find yourself getting Cs or worse. There are a lot of resources to help you out though. The Learning Center has tutors, review packets, and old exams which are available to you. You can always go to the professor and they will answer any question you have and work one on one with you. There is also a strong community of collaboration, you will find a study group with people on your floor or in your class if you want to. If you use the resources and give effort, you can get a decent grade and understand the material (which is more important, especially if you work on projects after class).

Let me know if there’s anything else you want to know. There are some negatives about Rose, but there way more positives. I know when people talk about their college they only mention the positives and make it sound like the best place in the world. Obviously that’s not true. There are times I can’t stand the place. Sometimes I wish I went to a bigger school or one closer to home, but in the end I can’t see myself being as successful anywhere else.

I do want to say, if anybody here comes for a tour. Ask to see the BIC. It’s pretty impressive what projects go on in there.

@goodsense

Here’s a report which goes into details by major for jobs and graduate schools for the class of 2016.

https://www.rose-hulman.edu/career-services/PDFs/Job%20Outlook%20Report/Class%20of%202016%20Overview.pdf#RHIT-stats

P.S. Sorry if there are any glaring typos. I just got out of a 3 hour night exam and wanted to type up this reply before I went to bed.

@Delons
Thank you! Very helpful

Thank you Delons! Currently RHIT is top choice, depending on cost.
I’m glad the food is edible and readily available at various hours. When we visited, we only saw the cafeteria.
Our reservations (as a mom) are:
Size is small. Smaller than high school! But hoping since everyone is of similar mind academically, that it will “feel” bigger.
And the bells and open dorm room door policies give the feeling of high school and excessive supervision that appears risk to stifle development toward full independence as an adult AND maybe attract kids who aren’t ready to grow up yet.
Oh, and the survey in the common app gives a person pause about what RHIT is screening out.

But love the curriculum, loved the admissions people and tour catered to individual need, love the collaboration vs competition-- especially since the kids in theory should all be focused in the same direction. When we visited, it felt like “home”.

And the job placement rate in field of study. Stellar.

Oh the survey! That was odd right? Still so many many positives about the school as a whole! My son is excited that he got in!

@explorer16

You pretty much summed up my feelings about Rose. Freshman year was pretty awesome, our floor was very,very close. Almost everybody was good friends with everybody else. This does mean that there was pressure to do things with the floor, especially depending on your RA and SAs (Sophomore Advisors). Does this mean that you are forced to be part everything? No. There will be pressure from the floor, but you are always free to do whatever you want. You can have as much or as little independence as you want, especially after freshman year when you can move off campus. I took me a while to learn that I can just say no and that I don’t have to do everything.

The bells… I thought the same thing at first. I always saw College as a place where classes happen at random times throughout the day, and bells reminded me exactly of high school. Now that I’m here, I don’t even think about it. Since we are on a quarter system, most classes meet 4 times a week for 50 minutes a day (And most ECE classes have a 3 hour lab once a week). Each day is divided into 10 hours with the first starting at 8:05am and the last ending at 5:10pm. The bell and hour schedule makes everything simple and makes it very easy to sign up for classes and make sure you have a schedule that works. Could this all be done without having the bell and just assuming people know what time classes end? Probably.

My first choice school was Northeastern. I was accepted there, but the cost ruled it out. Looking back, I would choose Rose every time. It’s the concept of being a student in a class of 25 versus a number in a lecture of 300. I sometimes do wish that I would get the “big college” experience.

My advice to anybody that comes here would be to join a project team or an active club. That is where I have met some of the smartest and most interesting people at Rose. It’s also what I’ve been asked about in every interview I’ve had. That’s the reason I came to college, to get a job in industry. I already have an internship lined up for the summer and a co-op for fall quarter. Other students I’ve met have had or are going to internships at so many different amazing companies that it doesn’t even surprise me to hear about SpaceX, Tesla, Microsoft, Groupon, or Google internships anymore.

If you’re coming to Rose looking for the traditional “college experience”, you might want to visit first and see what it’s like before deciding. If you want to really learn the curriculum and be prepared too enter industry and want to be with a small group of people who all have the same end goal? Take a look at Rose.

Day 3, mail came, still nothing from Rose Hulman. Starting to get a little upset. Wife called them yesterday and they said that if we didn’t receive it by mid-next week to let them know… thanks… just ridiculous to have to go through this in 2017.

Rooting for you to get mail with good news today!

Thanks, but amazingly enough nothing yet again in today’s mail. But she was accepted to Notre Dame last night early action so that’s helping the wait for Rose-Hulman!

So sorry 4x529. Did they tell your wife the decision at least?

Delons, thanks for letting me pick your brain. Since you are ECE and a double major, I’m guessing you have some insight into this: APs. Is it better to use your Calc and Physics APs, take the summer class, or start from scratch and go through all the Calc and Physics?

DS is interested in analog and it looks like there’s much to learn at RHIT. Thoughts on this?

Got Colorado School of Mines admit too. They are bigger and EE isn’t one of their top majors.

No they won’t give any information over the phone. My daughter emailed the admissions office yesterday and received no reply. I have to say the situation is souring us a bit. I’m not really concerned because she has a strong application but this waiting and lack of information or caring from the school is sapping some the fun and excitement out of the process.
