Does anyone know if the application only requires the one open-ended essay question, or if there are also shorter essays (similar to the “meaningful activity” short answer on the common application)?

Thanks.

Thanks.

There are shorter "essays," but as I recall, they all related to Brown (how did you first hear of Brown? Why do you want to attend?).

Thanks. Also, do they consider these in the application, or are they just for informational purposes?

Well, it's hard to say what admissions considers exactly. And why, for that matter.

My impression is that the shorter essays are used for any of 3 things: 1) to find out why you're applying to Brown, 2) to get more writing samples, and 3) to complete their portrait of you. As far as 1) goes, I'm sure most applicants want to attend Brown, but some essays are more telling than others. Reason 2):Your personal statement has probably been cut and trimmed and styled and polished to the max, while the other essays give them an opportunity to see how you write without the help of half your family and teachers. And thirdly, with each additional piece of your application, they presumably get a better idea of who you are, what makes you tick, blah blah blah.

Hope that helps. :)

Also, if you are applying for chem/physics/compsci/engineering and/or PLME, expect a lot more essays.

when does Brown usually send out the apps ? late August?

I'm waiting for them too and considering many other colleges have sent me theirs I'm quite anxious about Brown's (Brown is my top school :) ).
